I think that Bill wanted to introduce new material , like what he’s doing with Billy and the Kids….

Bob has been resistant to this idea, and my personal opinion is that this is unfair to the fans.. the current lineup has been together for quite some time now, and they never once wrote a new tune. There is so much talent there and it could have happened. They could have had access to Hunter and Barlow estate poems and turned them into one more album for the fans who graciously supported them over the years..

Bill and Billy Strings introduced “Thunder “ at Bill’s 75 Bday shows..

D & C resisted the opportunity to move forward and thus Bill felt it was time to go..

Also, he’s the real and only “drummer” for the band.. Mickey isn’t a drummer as much as he’s a percussionist. He likes to just bang on pots and pans to see what sound he gets…And the last ten years he’s literally sleeping while playing…

Mayer, Oteil, and Jeff, are the band now, and should have played new songs. The old ones get boring especially when Weir sings them.. his voice sounds…. Well… old!

I’d like to see John, Jeff, and Oteil, start a Dead-like jam band, write new material, and perform it in the style of the Dead, but not the Dead… they can get new drummers and invite the former members once in a while to sit in… Mayer seems to excel in this style of playing and it’s a shame to let it end, after this tour is completed… it’s just my opinion and nobody needs to care what I think…. But that’s what I’d like….

I met the band 2 times.
First time when I was 14 they played at Princeton University in New Jersey, also in Philly at the Spectrum in the 1980's and smoked a fatty with Billy.
Those guys we're always so nice to me way back then, especially at Princeton University as me being a grom at 14.
My friend and I got to the auditorium when they were setting up their equipment at 4:30 in the afternoon. The whole band was so cool, and Pig pen was hilarious. They let me and my friend watch them practice and during the show that evening they let us sit on the stage.
An experience I will never forget.
When they closed Winterland in San Francisco. That was quite the concert to. My older brother took me to my first 🎶DEAD SHOW🎶at the Fillmore East when they were promoting their album Athem of the Sun back in 1967 or 68.
I can't count how many show's i saw of the best jam band in the World and still feel that way today 2023 living here in Bali.

D&C is Not an offshoot of the Grateful Dead. It’s a tribute band. And not a very good one.
That’s where creative differences come in.
It was obvious that Billy was as bored to tears as are many of us, with Bobby’s “re-imagining” of the GD catalog.
Playing everything as a shuffle. No dynamics, no air in the songs.
Same with much of Wolf Bros.
That last run with Kimock was unlistenable.
And now Bobby is adding song like don’t let go and butchering them.
To much good original music like Govt Mule or David Nelson Band to spend money and time on Bobby’s self indulgent dribble.
I thought it was Mayer, till I saw a recent clip of Mayer with his old trio.
Mayer has chops. But Bobby won’t let him have at it.

It is, what it is. Kreutzmann's arrangements are superior to Dead and Co, as well as the music itself. Lesh and Kreutzmann do the Dead sound in a more energetic musical manner. And, after almost 60 years it becomes time to do your own thing. You don't live forever. I've enjoyed the Dead since late '65 as the Warlocks and as far as I'm concerned their longevity is really a miracle. My friends and I talked about which band would last the most. Everybody said it would not be the Dead because they were the craziest. We didn't know shit.

If the Barton Hall was ANY indicator, its that they do realize the music has slowed down maybe too much. I hope they keep the same Barton energy throughout the tour. My biggest complaint(if you can call it that) is that theyre playing too slow and losing the original energy of the songs. Im glad many people feel the way i do and i hope the band is taking that to heart during this final tour. Seeing them in Dallas on the 26th. Itll be bittersweet as it is so i hope the energy is there.

I hear you brother. I’ve been bitchin about the tempo for years. They play every song at Row Jimmy tempo. I want to be able to have to catch my breath between songs and have my legs feel like wet noodles the next day. @tim ruth This year I saw the shows at Citizens Bank in Philadelphia and the two shows at Citifield. With Jay Lane taking over for Billy, the pace of the music is a lot faster. Last year when Jay filled in for Billy, the pace of the music was so much faster. I love Billy but Jay has improved the tempo to where it should be. Be Kind

Billy’s supple and crisp one-handed roll has always been the snap in the Dead’s groove. Irreplaceable. It makes total sense for him to feel creatively stifled in slower arrangements.

"one-handed roll"?? Are you actually a drummer? I am, and haven't the faintest idea as to what you mean. Yes, he was their backbone, but they certainly don't have remotely the same groove as they had years ago. Weir dictates the tempos I believe, and apparently he likes it slooooooow.

When your NOT creating,..your stifling the flow and the creative source isn't present. There is something alive about the grateful dead which may not be within the D& C..yet it's Beautiful & lovely to hear Bob Weir singing. If you have those two drummers it's some kinda wonderful. Some success? This Dead train has been a juggernaut through various incarnations & 5 decades and for much of that time one of the most successful & top grossing touring bands on the planet. I saw 2 of the recent shows, one at Citi Field and one at Fenway. The tempo at Citi was upsetting to say the least. The opening 4 songs, Shakedown, Bertha, Ramble on Rose, and Dancing in the street were played so slowly I didn't even get out of my seat. The crowd around me must have felt the same way because no one was really moving. If I saw a setlist with those 4 as openers I'd think it was a truly rocking show. This was the opposite. Put me in a shitty mood to boot. The UJB in the second set was painful to listen to. There were some bright spots but I find the whole thing predictable except for the setlist and that's not the reason I started this journey. Fenway was slightly better but Help>Slip was also a crawl. They made sure this was the last tour. I'm done. I'd rather see JRAD or Dark Star and opt for energy.

The BArton hall show was the best DnC show in years as the energy was there. Dead N Slow has been my name for this band. When I saw them last, the Shakedown Street was so slow i dont know how you could even dance to it and the whole show was like that and its not just that one show i went to. They have had no energy and the songs become stale. Also the song list has not extended very much. New songs that are brought in dont sound practiced at all, kinda winging it. WHen tickets cost this much, gotta come somewhat prepared. But i didnt think they would up the tempo, but they did FINALLY at the Barton Hall show. But whats weird is Billys show in N.O. had energy as well. So im not sure who is causing the slow down. I think its Bobby as he has been slowing these songs to a crawl for years and he does this with Wolf Bros. I use to see members of the dead all over and they brought energy. Now i could sleep thru half the show. So i stopped going to see them. I can get my Dead kick from other members projects and what not. Go see Melvin, he brings the energy. Go see JRAD, or go see Phil. Im shocked that Phil (on his 2nd liver) brings more energy than DnC had been up until this Barton show. But im not sold on this tempo continuing on thru the tour. Yeah these guys are getting older, but as i said Phil has no problems playing these songs in the correct tempo, and outside of DnC Billy doesnt either. Listen to Billy and the Kids, wowzA. So the only member that imho has done this tempo crap is Bobby. I think he must have lost a bet because he cant keep up with this pace very well. Really listen to his playing from the BARTON hall show. Its in and out, i think Bobbys LSD intake over the years has caught up to him and there are shows where hes great and others ive seen recently where i swear he needs guitar lessons haha and someone to tune his guitar properly. I remember at Lockn one year it was so bad with Bobbys guitar. HE was playing out of tune and didnt seem to realize it and it was just noise on top of everything else. I love the dead and the music and hey they are still dojng it so be happy we still got this happening. But there are so many options for a Dead fix and spending less $ at the same time and going to more intimate venues with better sound. Rather go to the Beacon Theatre than Fendway park ! Also ive seen a change in the audience since DnC really took off. I was at SPAC oe year and i got there with 50 hits of acid to sell before the show. It took me 6 hours to sell 50 hits at a DnC show ! It was all college frat kids and shit. Like DMB crowd has become DnC crowd a lot of over privledged kids with no manners or respect to the elders. Ive seen lots of negative shit from the lot scenes and its sad. But thats what happens when you try to reinvent the Dead and come up with someone like Mayer to play guitar. Ya got crowds that dont mix. In all my years of going to Dead related shows ive NEVER quite seen what i have the last few years of DnC. I am not wasting my $ to walk out disappointed and depressed by the product thats being delivered. I honestly felt so depressed leaving the last DnC show i went to (Hartford) that i couldnt even listen to the Dead for a little whole. The crowd, the band on a large scale is not my scene anymore. SO for yall going to DnC have a good time, but keep your eyes out for members of JGB, Furthur, Ratdog etc who tour for much less, bring the energy and keep control over the crowd better. The sound is #1 thing for me and these stadium shows suck, stay home and listen to a live show imho makes more sense than spending $500 total to go see them. I remember when Ratdog toured every year and we would go see 40+ shows at $20-30 a ticket. GDTStoo still existed. But sorry to say there has been a serious selling out by the members of the Dead in recent years that is not cool to me. Our unique crowd has been infiltraited by people who dont respect the elders. Sorry rant over. I could care less if anyone takes what i said the wrong way, i know denial is a tricky thing to admit haha! Kinda like people who think any guitar that says Gibson on it is the best thing since sliced bread. I am glad folks who never got to see members of the Dead have gotten their chances, but when i go into the dead as a youngin I followed the lead of the elders, now its know it all kids with no clue what they are talking about and violence and this hippy thug movement is sad.

Don't blame his tripping, that wasn't his drug(s) of choice. When they(D&C) started, it felt better than FTW had but I expected some slowness as Ratdog was pretty slow in 2014. Jack Straw was almost painful to hear but other songs seemed to open new pathways with slower tempos. Depends on the song and show and tour. 50 hits? Back in the day, I would have bought that in 5 seconds for the right price and quality and then if good, hoped for more. Saw Phish on a Campus in a College town in '99, arrived too late for any lot scene. Inside the show, it was like "drunk frat boy--idiot convention" complete with puke and piss and whiskey pints all over. The next night, few hours away in a town known for more than a big university system, doses were flowing and music was great and most cover tunes I'd heard them play outside of those old Halloween shows. Literally ran right into the band after the show. We didn't even think about the tour bus, we were just floating along when the door of the arena flew open 3 times like flippers on an old pinball game.
I don't expect the tempo at their age, I'm younger than everyone except John M. (I think anyhow), and I'm in slow motion these last 5-10 years but when I started listening to them, Jerry was still in his upper 30s. I listened to a lot of metal and hard-core punk, and I was amazed by how "these old guys" played. I'd rather hear them a little slower than not at all. I mean, I really wish we never aged past 40 but I think we would have surpassed standing room long ago if aging or death didn't take us.

Deadhead from 1977-1995. Dead and Company play Bob Weir's own tunes well, but when they try and do a Jerry Garcia song it's cringeworthy! Friends who toured with me during my Deadhead days tend to agree. Jerry carried any band he played in, and when you take away virtuosos like Phil and Billy, it's not worthy of the name "Dead"! But if you had never seen Jerry with the Dead or with JGB you won't know what you're missing! Ignorance is bliss. Dead Slow & Co. for sure!

I was born two months before Jerry passed away. I’ve only ever had archive recordings of the Grateful Dead. I’ve got a lot of respect for Bob, Bill, Mickey, Jeff, Otiel, and John. Dead and Co. was always a day late and a buck short for me. Never quite had the same mind blowing sequences the Grateful Dead were able to achieve. Might be controversial, but in my opinion JRAD does a better job at emulating what peak Dead were able to do better than Dead and Co. ever could.

Phils bass is so key to the sound. It’s amazing how much Phil and Bobby did play together. 30 years of GD, 3 years of Other Ones, 3 Years of The Dead, 5 years of Further plus 2015 reunion and the duo shows. I agree would be wonderful if Phil and Bobby played together again.

I've had the privelege of attending 4 Dead & Company shows during the past three years - 2 in Phoenix, 1 at Bethel Woods, first of three final shows at SF. I'm kind of over sad reviewers who can't take the fast / slow dynamics. They get bored. The band dragged through the first half of whatever song.. Both of which I've read in the past few minutes. Oh, that song was in the wrong place in the show. Oh, that was a lackluster song to open with. I'm just so thankful and enriched that I had this opportunity to enjoy this wonderful band carrying on the legacy and making this great music available for a few more years. Let the music play.

As a longtime Dead fan since 68 the last couple times I saw Dead and Company it was underwhelming. I’m thinking of seeing them in a few weeks for the last time . Earlier this afternoon I saw two songs from New Orleans and it was a turn off . I don’t want to be negative but facts are facts. Bobby and Mickey are getting older and understandably are slowing down. I’m 71 and it’s jus a reality of getting older .
I’d actually prefer if they played shorter times but be more energetic.
Nothing lasts forever and I’m glad they’ve finally decided to end the big tours . It’s an end to the long strange trip and it has been fun .

This news is a lot less sad if you caught the Cornell ‘23 show last night. “Dead & Slow” was very much Alive and Energetic. Jay is a great fit and brought a much needed dose of life to the whole band. Bill needs to stick with the Kids and let Jay take it forward with whatever progression of the band comes next.

Correction, it’s not Dead & Slow. It’ Slow & Company! I agree with your theories. It’s been a wonderful run and I’m thankful for DeadCo, but watching a recent video with Billy and the kids and with Cosmic Country I was saying to myself, is this the same Bill K I saw with DeadCo? I mean, it was like he’s back! The drummer I remember operating a faster more open pace. So perhaps there's something to it, DeadCo not being a good fit for his musical energy anymore. Glad he’s branching out to help spread Grateful Dead energy and inspiration in a different context. This is all about moving on and allowing a new generation of musicians to have an opportunity to play music with a Grateful Dead member and to experience the energy. We are fortunate the remaining members are committed to spreading the magic in their later years. For what it's worth, out of all the iterations for GD music, i likely stand alone when I say, it thought Further was the best - for me. They really explored the GD catalog. Thanks for the video!

Bill probably got sick of carry everyone's weight. He was literally the human timekeeper. He often looks stressed. I think Dead & Company is just a cover band now, and there are a lot of bands doing it better with more improvisation and creativity, i.e. JRAD. It's a bummer, but Bill is a champ. I'm guessing he and Bob couldn't agree on the the past vs. the future.

I feel yall on the slow tempos...theres a versions of Cumberland Blues 6.29.18 that is uptempo and Mayer and the rest of the band just cook the whole time...not sure why it slowed down. but man when this crew is on they kill.

Been seeing the Dead since 81. Huge Primus fan too (screen name checks out). So yeah, I think Jay Lane is a badass. Will miss Kreutzmann this Summer from a nostalgia standpoint. But Jay Lane will be superb and I'm glad he's the guy. I'll catch at least 1 more SloMo Brothers show.... I understand all the complaints about the pace and Bob's catastrophic re-interpretation of cadence (esp during AM Dew). But I've never had a bad time at a SloMo Brothers show, and I know this last round of shows will be enjoyable too.

This comment gets to the point, the shows are still fun to attend. They can be counted on for a solid Help-Slip-Franklin, a passable Cat-Rider, or Birdsong. The Sugar/Althea/Here Comes Sunshines are Mayer at his Dead-best. And you can shoot me down for saying but I prefer DnC's tighter Dark Stars / Stephens to the loose and dissonant classic GD's. But the song they really hit that high gear is Cumberland. So go and enjoy Weir is still a Shaman.

Bill does like an up tempo so that could be the difference. Not a big deal. These guys have been playing for so long. They can do whatever they want. I am long done with shows but that is because I don't live in the US anymore. Have no urge to return so couch tour it is. I just hope they stay healthy and happy for the remainder of their time. They have gone far and beyond what anyone expected or should expect from them now.

It has to be they play somewhat slow songs to begin with at 30-40% speed now. Drummers are hyper and don't want to slow down. I saw them do Shakedown Street and the speed limit was 25 lol

You hit the nail on the head with the last line. Jerry, Phil and Bob kept each other honest via their differences and the result was magic. Bob, in particular, needs that opposing force to bring him to a higher level. When he's on that level, he can rock as hard as the best of them. But without that opposing force, it's a big time downer.

The band “Was Slow n Co” not Dead n Slow. That said at the Forum Slow n Co didn’t show. It was high quality high energy and the best I’ve ever heard Dead n Co sound. I’ve only been seeing The Dead and permutations since 1978.

I'm with you...kind of weird...creative differences on a final tour...it's like go, get it done, and move on from there. Curiously, I did have a friend of mine tell me that he wasn't keen on Weir's playing lately thinking everything was just too slow tempo...I'm only a casual observer so don't hyper-follow these guys around, but whatever the reason it seems to me the right thing to do would be to finish up with the band you are a part of and go off in any direction you want after that.

Apparently, Billy microdoses for every show. He said it "removes all judgement." Well, eventually judgement comes a knocking because that's what a consciousness does. He wouldn't be the first person to sober up too late and then try and change directions. It's happened to me more times than I can count.

Music plays the band and its the drummer that sets the tempo, only musicians know if you play a certain speed for decades then all the sudden turnit down, its unnatural to play, bobby slowed it down for mayer to grow into it,but he only grew to the slow which didn't werk for billy, all ya gotta do is listen to billy n kids and your answers are there. Its the tempo.

Dead and Co is not slow, It’s deliberate. They pulled 61 seconds out of a minute. People seem to be in quite a rush for each of these songs to end. It makes sense to let the song breathe so all of its parts can be heard. There’s plenty of exciting danceable rhythms in Dead and Company music. 0TEil plus Billy plus Jeff plus Mikey equals great rhythm. If you get confused listen to the music play.

I appreciate your opinion, but I strongly disagree. Fans want 9-24 minute versions of the songs at the tempo they were performed in the 70s with tons of improvisation, jamming, interludes, and teases. You don't get that with D&Slo. You get slow dances for 75 yr old couples.

I appreciate your opinion but a slower tempo is a slower tempo…deliberate or not. However, Dead & Co.(slo) is a great way for new or young fans to be able to see some of the original members onstage and playing.
