DeJ Loaf was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised on the east side of the city in the Fairview Housing projects. Growing up, she would often listen to music with her parents and grandmother, ranging "from 2Pac to Rakim to Miles Davis." Her father was killed when she was aged 4. A self-described "good kid and a decent student" who mostly kept to herself, she began writing her own original music as early as 9 years old. She graduated high school in 2009, played basketball up to the junior varsity level, and later attended Saginaw Valley State University to study nursing for three semesters before deciding to focus on a full-time music career.

We can keep it on the DL
Hell nah, girl, I'll never tell
You with a new nigga, I'm with my same girl
Mama said we both should be ashamed, girl
Creepin' like we hit a lick
Got you cummin' when I licky lick
But still
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Don't say a word
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you
Ain't no white house, ain't no picket fence
Baby you know we don't want the same things
While you're caught up in your feelings
I feel the same as I did yesterday
Baby we've been through this and I feel the same way
I know you don't wanna hear this and I hate to say it, babe
I hate to do it, but
I don't, I don't know why
I put you in this situation knowin' you will
Fall in love with me, but I won't be there to catch you
If it ain't about the sex then I'd prolly neglect you
Don't take it personal, I'm just tryna protect you
I don't checked out, baby come meet me at the register
I know what you want, you wanna be on a pedestal
You wanna be mine, but I can't be more than friends with you
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I will keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I'mma keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
Won't you keep it on the down low?
I don't belong to you
I don't belong to you
Ain't no white house, ain't no picket fence
Baby you know we don't want the same things
While you're caught up in your feelings
I feel the same as I did yesterday
Baby we've been through this and I feel the same way
I know you don't wanna hear this and I hate to say it, babe
I don't belong to you
You called me last night and I ain't pick up
Why you wanna move fast? I like the small footsteps
Blowin' up my phone, I got the hookup
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
My love got you shook up
I don't belong to you, I don't belong to you
I said I don't belong to you, I don't belong to you
I don't belong to you, I don't belong to you, yeah
The lyrics to "I Don't Know" by Dej Loaf describe a relationship between two people who are engaging in a secretive, physical relationship without any commitment or emotional attachment. The singer emphasizes the need to keep the relationship on the down low, stating that they don't belong to the other person. The first stanza describes the singer and their partner's sneaking around and indulging in sexual pleasure while keeping their relationship a secret. The singer repeats the phrase "I don't belong to you, keep it on the down low" throughout the song, emphasizing their detachment and desire for privacy. They emphasize that the other person is caught up in their feelings while they feel the same as they did before.
The second stanza underscores the singer's lack of desire for a committed relationship. They state that they know the person they're involved with will fall in love with them, but they won't be there to catch them. The singer doesn't want to take on the responsibility of someone else's feelings and is trying to protect both parties by keeping their relationship physical and without commitment. In the final stanza, the singer emphasizes their unwillingness to be tied down and their desire for a slow-moving relationship with no strings attached.
Overall, the song speaks to the complexities of modern dating and the difficulties that come with trying to navigate a physical relationship without commitment or emotional involvement.
