River Song
Denis Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Water running through my knees
(Ahhh)
River, oh river moves so free
(Ahhh)
Oh mighty river endlessly
Oo mighty river
Oo lonely river
Has not got the time to say
I was born into the city life
It's all that I've ever known
You know it's rough gettin' round this place
So crowded I can hardly breathe
You can only see about a block or two
In L. A. that's the truth
I'm lookin' for some country life
Some kickin' room no more city life
I want the river
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river
(I got to get away I got to get away I got to get away)
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river
(I got to get away I got to get away I got to get away)
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river
(I got to get away I got to get away I got to get away)
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river
(I got to get away I got to get away I got to get away)
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on
It breaks my heart to see the city
I wonder why it ain't pretty
Oh I want to cry, want to cry
Come on you've got to do it do it do it
You got to run away you got to run away
You got to do it do it do it
You got to run away
You got to run away
You got to do it do it do it
You got to run away
You got to run away
You got to do it do it do it
You got to run away
You got to run away
You got to do it do it do it
You got to run away
You got to run away
The lyrics of Dennis Wilson's "River Song" discuss the singer's desire to escape from the busy city life and live more freely like a river. The first verse describes the singer walking by the river with the water flowing through his knees, marveling at the freedom and endless movement of the river. He goes on to express his yearning to be like the river and escape his confined city life. In the second verse, he talks about his dissatisfaction with the city and how crowded it is, making it difficult for him to breathe. He wishes to move away from the city and find "country life" where he can have more space to live and thrive.
The chorus amplifies the singer's voice as he repeats the phrase "I got to get away" multiple times, emphasizing his need for escape. The final verse contains an emotional plea for everyone to run away and escape the pressures of city life. The repetition of "you got to do it" and "you got to run away" suggests a sense of urgency in escaping the city's hustle and bustle.

Amazing song. Sat here in Northampton, England, July 2023....still amazing. RIP Dennis.

This is one of the best songs I've ever heard. If only he had toured it and released You Are so Beautiful as a single. He would've been by far the most successful BBoy, because he had MORE than the others. He had the handsomeness, sex appeal, charm, humbleness and charisma - the others lacked. He also had a sexy raspy voice, wrote great songs and had a real presence. He really felt the music and moved to the rhythm. He should have been out front from the very start. His solo career could've then had a different trajectory. Sadly, he didn't believe in himself enough and neither did the others. I wish more people had told him how great he was. He was really special.🌹🌊❤️

Much more appealing band with Dennis out front instead of that yucky Mike Love

Dennis was truly the George Harrison of the group. Musically kept to the background behind Brian, Mike and Carl, as well as being his own person away from the group. But when given his own chance at a solo effort, created something rather beautiful and timeless. Would've loved to have heard more from him, what a waste.

PLUS jOHN lENNON AND PAUL MC CARTNEY!

I actually thought more of a Jim morrision from the Doors. Dennis Wilson talent was overlooked by the beachboys. During the 70's.
