Berlín
Depressive Age Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You grow to a big town at one time
And then your tracks lost line
The war times draw your heart away
To west, north, south, east, everywhere
And then they cut you not for fun
Since '61 the wound still runs
To save the political pride
To heat the cold war with you

Berlin, a suburb or the Westworld's eye
I cannot love, cannot deny
You boil too fast til you dry
Anytime you're dry

Now you are bigger than before
But decadence grows in your soul
You spit that oil straight on our head
The clever get rich, the weak ones mad
In streets, in subways goes the race
The others come to find their ways
These countries where they are from
Are poor why are we rich here

Berlin, a suburb or the Westworld's eye
I cannot love, cannot deny

You boil too fast til you dry
And I will fly

Overall Meaning

"Berlin" by Depressive Age is a song that highlights the city's tumultuous history and situates it within the larger context of the Cold War. The song begins with the idea that Berlin was once a great city but it's tracks were lost during the war times, and that the wound inflicted in 1961 still runs deep. The lyrics suggest that the city was used to "heat the cold war," and its political division was a pawn for larger political games.

The chorus of the song reflects on this idea of the city being caught between two worlds. As a suburb or the Westworld's eye, the city is both loved and denied. The fast-paced, high-energy lifestyle of the city is both alluring and draining for those who live there. The final verse of the song highlights the ways in which the city has grown since its earlier days. Despite its larger size and success, decadence has crept into its soul, perpetuating a cycle of greed and inequality. The clever get rich, the weak ones get mad, and everyone is left racing to find their way in a society with stark wealth disparity.

@Trucking USA Joe Biden is in far better mental and physical shape than Donald Trump, who had the odd combination of senility and immaturity that I have commonly seen among elderly alcoholics who somehow avoided death by cirrhosis. Of course Trump is a non-drinker, but he is cruel, which is often a consequence of either syphilis (common among people who have unrestrained sex lives) or cocaine (perfectly fitting hollow people with money to burn, as was Trump) .

COVID-19 has imposed economic conditions typical of a war. We no longer have a free-enterprise economy for the duration, and we liberals see something wrong with that.

COVID-19 ravaged food-processing plants that have extreme crowding of workers who could easily be exposed to any epidemic. That explains some food shortages.

Car production went down because people were scared of long-term unemployment, which created a self-fulfilling prophecy. As for housing and rents -- America has been building little housing except for high-income earners since the financial crash of 2008, so guess what that does to housing costs and rents? Supply and demand. We will need to build some more affordable housing, but that runs counter to the interests of well-heeled real-estate interests such as large-scale slumlords who are among the most reactionary interests in urban areas. Maybe we would be well-advised to revitalize some cities that are losing population, like all but one big city in Ohio.

Yes, it is complex. As for ending inflation, there is one sure way: to compel people to participate in creating the wealth and selling the wares or doing services for less than a living wage. In effect, people create prosperity without enjoying it. That was the Reagan solution, and it worked -- at great cost to anyone not already well-off.

I’m glad I found this channel cause this is the closest thing we’ll get to a time machine with YouTube! Unless someone magically invents a plutonium fueled time machine in a DeLorean.

What I find fascinating and depressing is that throughout this time, the Nazism was under way and what these streets and sights would look like at the conclusion of WWII. That aside, once again you've given life to old movie footage with excellent use of sound effects and made this period of time 100% relatable.

@Guinevere In the Field Well, with Russia apparently on the verge of invading Ukraine, possibly with mercenaries already across the border, the geopolitical situation hasn't exactly improved in the last 5 months. I'm worried that Russia and China are going to work together to create chaos that will allow them both to further their goals.

@Munch517 I’d have said 1-2 years if we do not stop the way things are going. It’s on the rise again. Think about how the people in that video are enjoying more freedoms than most of the world is right now, and it’s still not as bad as it could be, yet…

Guinevere In the Field

I thought that too. In a mere few years many of those streets would be reduced to rubble, and how many of those people were going to die? Scary how normal it all looks, isn’t it. We should never take our peace for granted.
