UP ALL NIGHT
Deric Ruttan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They got 50 cent drafts at the Legion bar
A band playin' Skynard and CCR
The place is packed and they're still pilin' in
Hope nobody calls the cops again

Hey, oh - havin' too much fun
Worked all week now the work's all done
Everybody's feelin' alright
So what do you say - let's stay up all night
Up all night

Sally called her sitter, said she'd be home late
Jenny threw beer in her boyfriend's face
Tommy passed out still holdin' his glass
Someone took a marker, drew a big moustache

Hey, oh - havin' too much fun
Worked all week now the work's all done
Everybody's feelin' alright
So what do you say - let's stay up all night
Up all night

The joint's still rockin' at a quarter-to-two
We drank all the beer and the whiskey, too
The band just kicked off "Gimme Three Steps"
Ain't nobody goin' home just yet

Hey, oh - havin' too much fun
Worked all week now the work's all done
Everybody's feelin' alright

So what do you say - let's stay up all night
Up all night

Overall Meaning

In Deric Ruttan's song "Up All Night," he depicts a night of wild, carefree fun in a packed bar. The lyricist's use of imagery is noteworthy as it captures the vividness of the scene he is describing that the listener feels immersed in it. The description of an overflowing bar with cheap beer and great music evokes a sense of community and comfort. Lines such as "Hope nobody calls the cops again" add to the carefree atmosphere to this night. The second stanza introduces the listener to the partygoers, including Sally, who has called her sitter to say she'll be home late, Jenny, who throws beer in her boyfriend's face, and Tommy, who has passed out while still clutching his glass. These short stories give the listener a snapshot of the party's wild happenings and the revelers who are letting loose.

The chorus, "Hey, oh - havin' too much fun, Worked all week, now the work's all done, Everybody's feelin' alright, So what do you say - let's stay up all night, Up all night," repeats multiple times throughout the song. The catchy melody accompanies the chorus, which resonates with the listener, making them feel like they are part of the party's energy. This song is about living life to the fullest and enjoying it, as for a night, the characters put their worries aside and live in the present moment.

Oh the memories of being at the Harrow Fair concert and photographing this for the radio station. Was nice to see myself in here twice. It brought back memories of great times and having one of my photos taken that night in the following album.

The memories of this song man... so many. I'll always remember shouting myself hoarse at your guelph performance in '10.

Can't wait to see Deric on tour with Chad Brownlee and Jason Blaine in November! Videos like this, and the video for My Kind Of Freedom are awesome because they show you that artists have just as much fun and just as much personality as the rest of us. Love it.
