In 1994 the hit single "You Gotta Be" hit Billboard Top 5 and was a hit in the UK three times. It also allowed Des'ree to break into America. "You Gotta Be" was also a major hit in the United States, and it was featured in the movie The Next Karate Kid, starring Hilary Swank. The second song from Des'ree's second album, "Crazy Maze" featured in the movie Nothing to Lose. Coincidentally, her last album ("Dream Soldier") featured a song entitled "Nothing to Lose". Her song "Kissing You" featured on the 1996 Baz Luhrman movie "Romeo + Juliet" and is generally considered to be one of her greatest works and a showcase for her distinctive and impressive vocals.
In 1999, she won a Brit Award for the British Female Solo Artist category. Her 2003 release Dream Soldier was considerably less successful.

A thousand trials
The strong will never fall
But watching stars without you
My soul cried
Heaving heart is full of pain
Oh, oh, the aching
I'm kissing you
Touch me deep
Pure and true
Gift to me forever
'Cause I'm kissing you, oh
I'm kissing you, oh
Yeah, hey, yeah
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
'Cause I'm kissing you
I'm kissing you, oh
Des'ree's "I'm Kissing You" is a love song that taps into the emotions of pain and longing that comes with separation from a loved one. The opening lines "Pride can stand, a thousand trials, the strong will never fall" suggest that the singer has a tough exterior and can handle anything thrown her way. However, the next line "But watching stars without you, my soul cried" reveals that deep down, she is hurting because of the absence of the person she loves. She is unable to escape the pain and her "heaving heart is full of pain."
The chorus "Cause I'm kissing you, oh I'm kissing you" repeatedly affirms that the singer's love is still strong despite distance and time. She then sings "Touch me deep, pure and true, gift to me forever" suggesting that the love she shares with her partner is an unbreakable bond. The last lines "Where are you now? Where are you now?" show the longing for a reunion with her loved one as she continues to kiss him in her mind.
Overall, "I'm Kissing You" is a display of love, passion, and longing that transcends distance and separation. Des'ree's soulful vocals and the dramatic composition of the song create an undeniable emotional connection with the audience.
