In 1994 the hit single "You Gotta Be" hit Billboard Top 5 and was a hit in the UK three times. It also allowed Des'ree to break into America. "You Gotta Be" was also a major hit in the United States, and it was featured in the movie The Next Karate Kid, starring Hilary Swank. The second song from Des'ree's second album, "Crazy Maze" featured in the movie Nothing to Lose. Coincidentally, her last album ("Dream Soldier") featured a song entitled "Nothing to Lose". Her song "Kissing You" featured on the 1996 Baz Luhrman movie "Romeo + Juliet" and is generally considered to be one of her greatest works and a showcase for her distinctive and impressive vocals.
In 1999, she won a Brit Award for the British Female Solo Artist category. Her 2003 release Dream Soldier was considerably less successful.

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh life, oh life
I'm afraid of the dark
'Specially when I'm in a park
And there's no one else around
Ooh, I get the shivers
It's a sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast
And watch the evening news
Life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Doo doo doo doo
Life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Doo doo doo
I'm a superstitious girl
I'm the worst in the world
Never walk under ladders
I keep a rabbit's tail
I'll take you up on a dare
Anytime, anywhere
Name the place, I'll be there
Bungee jumping, I don't care
Life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Doo doo doo doo
Life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Doo doo doo
Life
Doo doo doo
Doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo
So after all is said and done
I know I'm not the only one
Life indeed can be fun
If you really want to
Sometimes living out your dreams
Ain't as easy as it seems
You wanna fly around the world
In a beautiful balloon
Life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Doo doo doo doo
Life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Doo doo doo doo
Life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Doo doo doo doo
Life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo
Oh life, oh life
Oh life, oh life, oh life, oh life
Oh life, oh life, oh life, oh life
The lyrics of Des'ree's song "Life" portray the various anxieties and fears that people might have in their lives. The opening lines suggest the fear of the dark, and the uneasiness of being in a park when there is no one else around. The fear of seeing a ghost is also mentioned, which depicts the common fear of the unknown or supernatural that many people might have. The line "I'd rather have a piece of toast and watch the evening news" suggests a preference for mundane normalcy and comforts of life over the fear of the unknown.
The next verse talks about how the singer of the song is a superstitious person who avoids walking under ladders and keeps a rabbit's tail. However, the chorus of the song suggests that life can be enjoyable and fun if one chooses to see it that way. Sometimes achieving our dreams can be challenging, but it's essential to keep striving to make life what we want it to be. The line "You wanna fly around the world in a beautiful balloon" represents the desire to pursue the impossible dream and to live life to the fullest.
Overall, the song's message is about embracing life's challenges and fears and not letting them hold us back. The upbeat rhythm and catchy chorus are meant to inspire and motivate people to enjoy life despite the struggles that arise along the way.
