It's My Turn
Diana Ross Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In the name of love
Or play it safe
For a while that was easy
And if living for myself
Is what I'm guilty of
Go on and sentence me
I'll still be free
It's my turn
To see what I can see
I hope you'll understand
This time's just for me
Because it's my turn
With no apologies
I've given up the truth
To those I've tried to please
But now it's my turn
If I don't have all the answers
At least I know I'll take my share of chances
Ain't no use of holding on
When nothing stays the same
So I'll let it rain
'Cause the rain ain't gonna hurt me
And I'll let you go
'Though I know it won't be easy
It's my turn
With no more room for lies
For years I'd seen my life
Through someone else's eyes
And now it's my turn
To try and find my way
And if I should get lost
At least I'll own today
It's my turn
Yes, it's my turn
And there ain't no use in holding on
When nothing stays the same
So I'll let it rain
'Cause the rain ain't gonna hurt me
And I'll let you go
'Though I know it won't be easy
It's my turn
To see what I can see
I hope you'll understand
This time's just for me
Because it's my turn
To turn and say good-bye
I sure would like to know
That you're still on my side
Because it's my turn
It's my turn
It's my turn
To start from number one
Trying to undo
Some damage that's been done
But now it's my turn
To reach and touch the sky
No one's gonna say
At least I didn't try
It's my turn
Yes, it's my turn
It's my turn
It's my turn
It's my turn
In Diana Ross's song "It's My Turn," the singer declares that it's her turn to live her life for herself, without any apologies. She confesses that she can't keep hiding her true feelings, and won't play it safe in the name of love anymore. The singer acknowledges that she's been guilty of living her life for others, and now she's ready to own her own truth. She's prepared to take her share of chances and isn't scared to make mistakes while trying to find her way. The singer is willing to let go of the past, even if it is painful, and is ready to face the future.
The message of the song is that everyone has the right to live their own lives, to make their own decisions, and to be true to themselves. The singer realizes that living someone else's truth has only led her to a path of confusion and unhappiness. She's now determined to start afresh and find her own way, even if it means starting from scratch.

I can't cover up my feelings
I am unable to hide my true emotions
In the name of love
Just to please someone else
Or play it safe
To not take risks
For a while that was easy
It was comfortable to live that way before
And if living for myself
Even if I choose to live just for myself
Is what I'm guilty of
If that is what I am accused of
Go on and sentence me
Feel free to judge me
I'll still be free
But I will remain liberated
It's my turn
Now it is my time
To see what I can see
To take a chance and look at things differently
I hope you'll understand
I hope you can empathize
This time's just for me
This time is solely for myself
With no apologies
Without feeling the need to say sorry
I've given up the truth
I stopped being truthful to make others happy
To those I've tried to please
Those who I aimed to impress
If I don't have all the answers
I may not have all the solutions
At least I know I'll take my share of chances
But I will take the opportunities that come my way
Ain't no use of holding on
There is no point in staying put
When nothing stays the same
When everything continuously changes
So I'll let it rain
I will let life happen
'Cause the rain ain't gonna hurt me
Because I know I can handle it
And I'll let you go
And I will let you leave my life
'Though I know it won't be easy
Even though it will be difficult
With no more room for lies
No more space for deception
For years I'd seen my life
For a long time, I saw my existence
Through someone else's eyes
The way someone else saw it
To try and find my way
To search for my own path
And if I should get lost
If I get lost in the process
At least I'll own today
I will still take charge of my present
To turn and say goodbye
To face and bid farewell
I sure would like to know
I would love to find out
That you're still on my side
If you still remain supportive of me
To start from number one
To begin again from the beginning
Trying to undo
Attempting to reverse
Some damage that's been done
Some harm that has occurred before
To reach and touch the sky
To aspire and achieve big dreams
No one's gonna say
Nobody will claim
At least I didn't try
That I did not give it my best shot
Yes, it's my turn
Indeed, it is my turn

@Diana-qi2mh
This song hits different when you’re almost 50 and realizing (but also scared) that you want to give this thing called life your own spin on it…not the expectations/influence placed by everybody else.

This song is such a tearjerker. It doesn’t get the justice it deserves with all of the rest of Diana’s songs, but, I would put this in the top five of her all-time best.
