Theme From Mahogany
Diana Ross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you?
Where are you going to?
Do you know?

Do you get what you're hoping for?
When you look behind you, there's no open doors
What are you hoping for?
Do you know?

Once we were standing still in time
Chasing the fantasies that filled our minds
You knew how I loved you, but my spirit was free
Laughing at the questions that you once asked of me

Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you?
Where are you going to?
Do you know?

Now looking back at all we planned
We let so many dreams just slip through our hands
Why must we wait so long before we see
How sad the answers to those questions can be?

Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you?
Where are you going to?
Do you know?

Do you get what you're hoping for?
When you look behind you, there's no open doors

What are you hoping for?
Do you know?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Diana Ross's song "Theme From Mahogany" are a poignant reflection on the universal human experience of searching for meaning and direction in life. The first verse asks the listener a series of questions about their own life and purpose: Do you know where you're going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you? Where are you going to? Do you know? These questions invite introspection and self-reflection, urging the listener to consider their goals and aspirations and whether they are truly living in accordance with them.

The second verse delves deeper into the theme of missed opportunities and regret. The lyrics describe a time when the singer and their loved one were "standing still in time" and "chasing the fantasies that filled our minds." At that moment, they were happy and in love, but the singer's spirit was also free, unencumbered by the kinds of questions or doubts that come with the passage of time. Looking back on this moment now, the singer realizes that they let many of their dreams slip away and wonders why they waited so long before seeing how sad the answers to life's questions can be.

Ultimately, the song urges listeners to take stock of their lives and make sure they are living with purpose and intention. Through its reflective lyrics and moving melody, "Theme From Mahogany" encourages us to ask ourselves the tough questions and make sure we are living the best possible life.

I remember I was a little boy on my own climbing over the fence at the drive in movies to sit and watch this film. How a song can stay with a boy all his life and bring back such powerful memories. Music helps those suffering from Alzheimers.
