People
Diana Ross & The Supremes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world

We're children needing other children
And yet, letting our grown up pride
Hide all the need inside
Acting more like children than children

People
God's children
Were born to be free
To love
All people have a dream
For peace, for security
Let the world fall in love again
Please, please, let our lies not be in vain

Lovers are very special people
They're the luckiest people in the world
With one person
One very special person
A feeling deep in your soul says
You were half, now you're whole

No more hunger and thirst
But first be a person who needs people

People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world

Overall Meaning

The song "People" by Diana Ross and The Supremes is a beautiful composition about the human connections that we all need to feel fulfilled in life. The central message of the song is that people who need people are the luckiest people in the world. The lyrics also argue that regardless of age, gender, or nationality, we are all human beings who need love, security, and peace. The song emphasizes that we should not let our pride or misunderstandings obscure our fundamental need for connection.

The first few lines of the song highlight the fact that as human beings, we are all children in some sense, and we all need others to help us grow and feel complete. However, the song also acknowledges the reality that as we grow older, we often lose touch with our childlike vulnerability and erect walls around ourselves to protect our egos. The lyrics urge us to break down these walls and be more open to connecting with others on a deeper level.

In the second half of the song, the focus shifts to love and the power of intimate connections. The lyrics suggest that lovers are the luckiest people in the world because they have found that one special person who completes them and fills their heart with joy. The song ends on an optimistic note, with a call for everyone to be a person who needs people and to let the world fall in love again.

JSOMERSET994 JSOMERSET994 I agree with you but Flo was even more so coached on how to deliver her vocals. Her natural style was more powerful than the restrained performance she gives here. Flo was more of a belter but she sings in light chest/mix for the song.

The Supremes sound was constructed around Diana's sweet, charismatic soprano. Flo had to pull back a lot to blend with Mary and Diana.

Neither Flo or Diana have the freedom to do what they want but Diana has much more seeing as though her later recording is a solo whereas Flo's only true "lead" vocal is after a whole verse by Diana.

The Supremes' version of People was recorded during their busiest year in which they recorded 6 albums - 5 of which came out in 1965. Diana had a further 3 years 'til the Funny Girl album to perfect her lead on People and by that time the other members of the group were barely if at all audible on studio recordings.

Diana had more than enough opportunity to flex her muscles. Flo's lead on People is only available thanks to later released compilations, such was the rarity of anyone but Diana taking the lead post 1962.

Flo's voice sounded more mature than Diana's. So much more soulful. Love it

Florence Ballard's version of this song is so beautiful she's the reason that she is truly supreme. She's making the heavenly choir really strong. Love you Florence Ballard.

I'm sorry but Flo's version is superb, the way she hits those high notes gives me chills, this song was perfect for her to sing, they should have left Diana on the backing vocals for this song

TWTR4EVER

THE FLORENCE BALLARD version has the best harmonies, the most sincere touching delivery and overall the best version after Barbra ever recorded!

All three Supremes should have had a turn at the lead mic. Florence was fantastic and always my fave Supreme. RIP.
