Navy Blue
Diane Renay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'Cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

He said he wanted to settle down
And let me be his girl
But first he had to do a little travelin' around
And see the whole wide world

That's why I'm
Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'Cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

I got a letter yesterday from Tokyo
And a souvenir
A walky-talky wind-up little China doll
That says "Wish you were here"

Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'Cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

He's comin' home to see me on a weekend pass
A forty-eight hour day-ate
That boat he's sailin' on just better get here fast
'Cause I can hardly wait

Till then I'm
Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'Cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

Ah-ahhhhhh
"Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be"

Ah-ahhhhhh

Overall Meaning

The song "Navy Blue" by Diane Renay talks about a girl whose boyfriend has joined the navy and left her feeling blue. She narrates her story of how her steady boy wanted to settle down with her, but first, he had to travel around the world with the navy. She expresses her sadness since she loves him, and now she has to wait for him to come back. She receives a letter from him from Tokyo, along with a souvenir, which makes her even more upset, wishing that he were with her. She is excited to see him on a weekend pass. However, as she waits for him, she is still feeling overwhelmingly blue.

The lyrics paint a picture of longing and sadness, as the girl in the song misses her love, who is away serving his country. She describes the phone she received from him as a 'walky-talky wind-up little China doll.' The song was written during the 1960s, a time of great patriotism, and it portrays the sacrifices made by military families. The song has long been a classic and remains a hit among music lovers even today.
