Still one of the best videos of the early rock n roll era........Eddie was the complete package of the early rock entertainer. Not only did he write a lot of his own songs, he played some wicked lead guitar and was instrumental in creating the template for future guitarists. Amazing to think he was only 20 years old at the time of this show, and carried all of that talent, as well as stage presence and maturity in handling himself admirably in the interview. 1959 folks.... Surely, he (like Buddy Holly) would of gone on to great fame somehow in the world of music, had he lived. RIP, Eddie and thanks for your musical brilliance. Best CD to have?

Incredible seminal stuff here. You can just see and hear how much energy and enthusiasm is pouring off the musicians on that stage. Eddie combined the sexy swagger of Elvis with the energy and musical prowess of Chuck Berry into a very potent force. His guitar skills are formidable. And his respect for his band mates is clear. And seriously, dude could sing with the best of em. What a great example to all budding musicians and performers.

Great to see a rare piece of live footage of Eddie. Eddie's comments about Rock & Roll typify how far advanced he was in his thinking - the guy was a total legend and had a ton of talent to boot. It's a shame that he never lived past his 21st birthday, but he's always been my favourite rocker of the 1950's.

I’m so pleased I’ve come across this film. As a young teenager in England I had only heard Eddie’s records on the radio and I remember one morning listening to the news on the BBC saying he had died in a car accident, I thought what a tragic end to such a great singer, however his music lives on. Watching this film it’s striking how visually and vocally similar he was to Elvis, but to me Eddies ability to actually play his guitar whilst singing is something Elvis could never do and Eddies guitar playing is right up there with Buddy Holly, both of which were pioneers in their respective brand of Rock ‘n Roll, his chord patterns on C’mon Everybody are brilliant.

Your right Eddie was a fantastic musician way ahead of his time just like Buddy . Elvis while he didn't really write like Eddie he did play guitar while singing he played rhythm on his Martin D18 on it's alright, Blue moon of Kentucky etc. He just wasn't as accomplished as Eddie but he had Scotty Moore then James Burton so didn't have to be.

As a guitar player myself . What Eddie did as he sang with the Guitars of that era. He was awesome .Yes writing ones own songs is very important . Eddie along with Buddy Holly and C. Berry opened the door for all that followed. As they all wrote their own songs .The internet will keep this great stuff alive.

I'll tell you what, I'm surely glad that this live film footage exist! It gave me at least in part, the magnitude talent that Eddie Cochran had at such a young age! The other interesting part of this live film, is the gentleman asking Eddie on his perspective on his own music and Rock and Roll in general. Very Unique in the fact that this film captures Eddie in his young progressive style, just before his untimely Death :'(

Eddie's Tragic Death will always be one of Rock-N-Roll's Great Mysteries!

Eddie was an old soul in a young body, and proof that you dont have to be living to be a role model for the young today. Its staggering to think of what he achieved and the legacy he has left in his 21 years. Elvis rolled, but it was Eddy who rocked.

Lets start by saying that even by 1956, Cochrane's style is ENTIRELY his own, the only unavoidable resemblance to earlier Elvis, who was then in the Army, was his hairstyle, some of the vocals, and the baby face, but he couldn't avoid neither. But his smaller ambition, which had started actually the moment he saw Presley rock, set him apart from Elvis who, because had been born out of REAL poverty, saw his career differently. You are not born of a practically unemployed dad, in the poorest state of the Union, then move with your parents to the second poorest, have the most ecclectic voice, photographic memory and encyclopedic knowledge of all music mediums of all the kids in your generation (some say ever,), as well as have fused by the time you are 19 years old the two most important music idioms then in existance in America, R/B and C/W and in the process helped create a hybrid, rockabilly, to FINALLY want to remain a singer or a record producer. It just doesnt make sense. Put yourself in Presley's place. As an usher at a Memphis theatre, age 16, he wanted to be bigger than that, like his "true" idols, James Dean, Marlon Brando and Tony Curtis whose entire speaking parts he knew by heart. The 35 R/B and blues giants, the 25 CW stars, the 50 gospel singers and quartets and the 100 pop singers, from Mario Lanza to Dean Martin and Agustin Lara who influenced Presley musically, were, with the exception of both Lanza and Martin, who also made movies, NOT his true idols . And 37 years after his death, he has clearly beaten all of them, in terms of TRUE, not imagined iconic power, but more on that later. For all of Cochrane's earnest artistry, songwriting skills, innovation as a producer, and superb guitar playing, like Buddy Holly ( the two had ALL OF THAT in common, as well as singular, readily identified voices), what Cochrane and all the others did NOT have, those added attributes which made Presley irreplaceable, inspite of the idiotic stuff he did, in terms of movies and some of the songs in those movies,. was both the 50 voices he had, during his career, practically the equivalent of a ventriloquist, as some music historians are now saying, and more importantly, the personal interaction Presley had with a select but extremely influential segment of his massive fandom. The 12 disciples, so to speak but, if my calculations are right, multiplied by a factor of 100,000. LOL. Not only Presley's fanbase was and remained, even today, in the millions. but those 1,200,000 I figure saw him, spoke with him, were photographed with him, and finally, even left with an autograph, and could later boast to have that moment photographed as well, is what makes Presley not just the most photographed musician in history, as the BBC pointed out in 2006, but an entirely different kind of celebrity, one whose autograph, in spite of being the most readily available, happens to also be the most sought after. The laws of supply and demand gone out the window. And this was, is and remains so because you could touch him, zero problem about that. The biggest, most sustainable megacelebity ever, Presley was known to welcome a person with a camera, as he or she approached him, as if that person was his uncle. LOL. There are so many artists whose fans dream, wishful thinking really, of replacing Presley as the all time favourite by the masses, worldwide, but they tend to forget how difficult it was, and is, to remain that kind of a celebrity in the eyes of his or her followers, decade in decade out, because eventually and almost invariably, the image of that celebrity is MORE than the person's actual worth. But not in Presley's case. He was, by all accounts, in person, even more likeable and those 1.200,000 who stood outside of every wall, barrack, hotel, or garden which separated Presley from those waiting to see him come or leave the premises have, little by little, and basically by word of mouth, ensured, and this is just one of 100 examples, that this guy's home shall continue to be visited by in excess of 600,000 paying visitors annually, from the 5 continents, mind you. Thus far, it's been 20 million. And, in the last time his " iconic power" was put to the test, to a real test (not in this thread) and during the biggest day in the history of art in November of last year, at Christies, in NY, yes, the day US$845 million dollars changed hands in less than 2 hours, it was his "Triple Elvis" by Andy Warhol, which outsold the also Warhol made "Four Marlons" (and check this out, both were not just exactly the same size, but date from the same three year period, Warhol's best, 1963-1966) by a US$81.9 to US$69.5 million margin. And Presley was said to have been the worst actor in history and the Presley silkscreen was about a movie, as was Marlon's. So he beat Brando at his own game , in the world's most sophisticated city, one in which incidentally Presley felt less at ease. And he beat the guy who hated him until the day he (Brando,,LOL) died, thinking, wrongly, we now know, that Presley had bedded his then girlfriend Rita Moreno, who told Brando that, back in 1958, to make Brando jealous. In the meantime, Presley, who met Brando also that year, went to heavens loving Brando..

Wow, he was fantastic. I bet it was so exciting to be a teenager back then . Rock N Roll was new and the talent was pure and incredible. I have many relatives who were teenagers then and they all agreed it was an amazing time that can't be replaced.

He was just the greatest. He sounds in concert just like his records. He and Gene Vincent were so awesome and then both died young. So sad. Check out the movie "The Girl Can't Help It". I think both of them are in that movie.

This is an absolutely amazing find. Eddie was so ahead of his time and him dying at the age of 21 is beyond a tragedy. It's downright obscene. If he was allowed to live into the 60s and beyond he would've been a major player in the music world (not that he already wasn't). I bet he'd be a major session guitarist and record producer not to mention an out and out ROCKER!!!

Saw Eddie Gene Vincent and Little Richard on the same show in 1957 at the old Stadium Brisbane Australia. I was 14 and in high school at the time. In 1958 I saw Buddy Holly and the Crickets and Jerry Lee Lewis at Cloudland in Brisbane. Both venues have long gone. Have seen many Rock acts over the years but these two were definately the best ever.

@Robin the car ( taxi) hit a lamppost at 70mph there were 4 people in the car the driver his best friend ( GENE Vincent) and his girlfriend they had just finished a show in Bristol and were on route to Heathrow airport quite a different scenario than just randomly being found dead in a car 5000 miles from home. The only thing strange about it as you say really was the fact that the driver was doing 70mph in a built up area 60 years ago with 3 celebrity passengers in his car.

Eddie was so good with guitar that he backed several other artists in the studio, and often he is not credited. He said at one time, if the hits start failing that he could become a studio musician, or get into the recording business. He has a couple of guitar solos that have been released, one is "Guybo" (the nickname of his bass player), and the other I think is "Strolling Guitar". They may be on YT. Eddie was also experimenting with multi-track recording, and played several other instruments. I think he could have been one of the big producers of the 60's had he survived. He was as big a loss as Buddy Holly but rarely gets mentioned in the same sentence.

My favourite song of Eddie's is 3 Steps To Heaven. It never made the top 100 in the USA, but reached No.1 on the UK charts just after his death. He wrote it with his brother Bob. The song was recorded by Showaddywaddy in 1975 and reached No. 2 on the UK charts.

But notice how he's had 3 years to rehearse his style and guitar virtuosity (this is Cochrane in 1959, after all, not the Cochrane gadding about the 20th century Fox studio stage during the filming of "The Girl Cant help it!, or at American bandstand, where he had to lip sync, unlike Elvis whose 12 appearances on national television in the 11 month period when he changed the culture of rock and roll, and took it home, the American home where it counted and from where it would NEVER leave, were all live, because for starters the cost of an ad at any of those 4 shows he appeared (Dorsey, Berle, Allen and Sullivan was like five times that of Dick Clark's). This Cochrane style is ENTIRELY his own, the only unavoidable resemblance to earlier Elvis, who was now in the Arm,y, was his hairstyle, some of the vocals, and the baby face, but he couldn't avoid neither. Another good find. Had Eddie lived, he would have surpassed Elvis!! He was a very talented man for his age. As to his music, both singing and writing and playing instruments, it sounds like he was way ahead of his time and very knowledgeable about all types of music. A great loss! RIP Eddie.

He was great! He does a good version of Chuck Berry’s Hail Hail Rock n Roll, then sings a ballad well.

He had a great voice for both Rockers and Ballads just like Elvis did! What a talented guy and what a loss!

Something i would like to share to those fellow guitarists out there who want to emulate Eddie's unique sound. Eddie dropped both the high and low E strings down a full octave. It is how he managed to sound like he was playing a bass and guitar at the same time.

It's pointless to argue about who was superior - Elvis or Eddie - they were both great (even given Elvis's lapses in taste and his manipulation by "Colonel" Parker and Eddie's far superior musicianship). I do believe that Eddie admired Elvis; Eddie had been a country artist but decided to make the switch to rock 'n roll on hearing and being influenced by Elvis. As others have already said (below), Eddie Cochran was a great innovator, I believe he pretty much produced his own records, wrote nearly all of the songs and played most of the instruments. I sometimes wonder where he would have progressed to had he lived. He had the ability to do just about anything. His version of "Hallelujah I Love Her So" indicates to me that Eddie could have gone in the direction of jazz, perhaps. I just wish I had been old enough to attend one of his concerts, when Eddie was over in the UK. I like to think that Elvis, Eddie, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, George Harrison, et al are making great music together in the Great Beyond. This video is a great historical document. Thank you very much for uploading.

+promerops I really enjoyed your comment. I am sure "they" are all having a great time in the Great Beyond. I love so many singers/musicians and I don't compare them because they are all amazing in their own special unique way. Many compare Elvis and Michael Jackson and get into arguments in the "comment" sections and I don't understand. They are all pretty special gifts for us to enjoy while on earth. Eddie was a great musician and song writer. I'm glad he isn't forgotten. My cousin is 69 years old and she has never forgotten him. I was 7 years old when he died, but I knew of him because of 3 older brothers. I love all kinds of music including Mario Lanza. I grew up with him--my mother loved him. Vera Lynn one of my father's favorites. And I grew up in Southeast California on a ranch and knew and loved good music whoever played it. I listen to all venues of music love it all. Tragic how so many young musicians have died: Eddie Cochran, Ricky Nelson, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Elvis, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Bobby Darin, John Lennon, George Harrison, Johnny Horton, Patsy Cline, Otis Redding, Keith Whitley, and the list goes on, including their back-up musicians. Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly especially sad because they were I believe both just 21. I feel lucky I saw Elvis, Ricky Nelson, and Harry Chapin in concert, but wish I had seen more!

A capo is used for shortening the strings on a guitar or other stringed instrument to raise the pitches of the notes. It doesn't deaden notes. A better technique for deadening notes is to mute the strings with the wrist resting across the lower end of strings of the picking or fingering hand held just slightly above the bridge.

In fact some of the old basses came equipped mounted with a felt mute on a hinge anchored to the bridge that could be lowered across the strings set behind the pick-ups.

I have never seen a bass player use a capo, this was an early electric bass technique experiment, up until the advent of the fender bass, the cumbersome string bass was the standard which could deftly slap out the rockabilly beat. I notice the bass player here uses a pick and I suspect that the shorter scale created a faster attack on the stings creating that clean thwapping tone that drives the Cochran style.

Today, slapping the electric bass is common.

Back in the fifties there were so many great musicians around.The short lived Golden Age came to a shuddering halt with the imprisonment of Chuck Berry, the deaths of Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran, the conversion of Little Richard and conscription of Elvis. Following this superb period, tin pan alley dished up non entities like Fabian and Bobby Vee and a host of copycats and we had to wait for The Beatles before rock got back on track again.
Elvis had been absolute King before he joined the army and God only knew what he would be like when he came out - a pathetic shadow of his former self churning out one sugary movie after another as it turned out. Had Eddie lived I think he would have inherited the Crown - he was the only real alternative to Presley.

Thanks a million for this amazing video. Eddie was the complete musician, so very talented in his playing, his song-writing, his singing, and his knowledge of Studio techniques. He was the only person who Elvis was afraid would steal his crown (had he not died so tragically young) and he was a great influence on the mighty Rory Gallagher - I rest my case!

I like the fact that in 1959 Eddie Cochran credits Rhythm and Blues as the matrix of Rock and Roll and Johnny Bond goes back even further to 1929 and gives credit to Blues singer Jimmy Rogers.

I’m a 73 yr old Green Day fan, but rock ‘n roll was my first love, and I’ve loved Eddie Cochran for nigh on 60 years. So wonderful to find this. He was so talented, so charismatic, such a loss along with Buddy Holly. Music today would be nothing without early rockers. We owe them so much.

Can't speak too highly of Eddie Cochran. He was so highly respected by other musicians during the day. I remember it all very well. He truly had it all. Plus, sometimes the vocalist will also play rhythm guitar but not lead. Eddie played lead guitar and the rhythm guitarist was a part of his band. That's almost unheard of. It was such a loss when he passed. His future was brighter than anyone out there. RIP Eddie.

The Fender bass helps the sound. It's an actually superb for an TV pick-up. Most sound miserable (ala Buddy Holly on Ed Sullivan). Gettng decent sound mixes for TV, in those days was hit 'n' miss.
