Like Someone in Love
Dinah Shore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This change I feel puzzles me.
It's strange, a real mystery.
Maybe you see it.
If you do see it
What on earth can it be?

Lately I find myself out gazing at stars,
Hearing guitars like someone in love.
Sometimes the things I do astound me,
Mostly whenever you're around me.

Lately I seem to walk as though I had wings,
Bump into things like someone in love.
Each time I look at you I'm limp as a glove
And feeling like someone in love.

Overall Meaning

In Dinah Shore's song, "Like Someone In Love," the singer explores the mystery of the change she has been feeling lately. She finds herself in puzzlement over the way she has been acting, and wonders if anyone else has noticed. The singer then goes on to describe the various strange things she has been doing, such as gazing at stars and hearing guitars "like someone in love." She continues, saying that she is astounded by her own behavior, especially whenever the person she is singing to is around her.

The singer seems to have fallen head over heels for someone, and is feeling the effects of love in a very tangible way. She describes feeling weightless and buoyant, as though she has wings, and consequently, has been bumping into things. The singer's infatuation with this person is so strong that, even just looking at them, she feels like a limp glove, completely overcome by her love for them.

Overall, the song's lyrics illustrate the all-consuming effects of love and the way that it can make us behave in ways that we never would otherwise. It seems that the singer is completely baffled by the transformative power of love and is struggling to understand how it has taken hold of her so completely.

I remember watching the Dinah Shore Show. She was such a gentle soul with great talent. Her interviewing skills were some of the best. Very few can compare to her. The closest I have found lately is Bonnie Hunt.

bob blues

Grew up on her. She could sing the songs almost without embellishments.
As a jazz musician, IMO, If you can´t play the melody as the composer originally wrote the lead sheet, you are not in control of your art form.

@Kingsley Pedlar Hi Mr. Pedlar,
Mr. Van Heusen never failed to please. This song was/is still popular with every kind of singer; jazz included. I don't think rap has embraced it yet. For that I'm grateful. Also, I'm thankful to you for your comment. You thanked me, but I should be thanking you! Best wishes,

I was 10 in '45 but as you know, we grew up with all this beautiful around us. And might add, the "Golden Age of Hollywood" and those old radio shows of music, comedy and drama were great. I still listen to 1940's music all day long.

I know this song thanks to Björk, and I'm glad of that, because I love it in her cover and in this original style too :) it's an absolutely romantic song... and I'm happy to have someone to dedicate it to :) Hearing guitars like someone in love~

Thanks so much for your comment. There was just something special about Dinah, and how she could "seal the deal" vocally. Even in this clip, she was already showing 'em how! Good to hear from you!
