It's Only A Paper Moon
Dion The Belmonts Lyrics

Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Yes, it's only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn't be make-believe
Without your love
It's a honky tonk parade
Without your love
It's a melody played in a penny arcade
It's a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Say, it's only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Yes, it's only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Without your love
It's a honky-tonk parade
Without your love
It's a melody played in a penny arcade
It's a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
It's phony it's plain to see
How happy I would be
If you believed in me
The song "It's Only a Paper Moon" is a classic example of a love song that uses whimsical and imaginative lyrics to convey the theme of love and the power of belief. The lyrics speak to the idea that the world may appear fake or phony, but if you believe in someone or something, it becomes real to you. The song's use of light-hearted imagery, like a paper moon sailing over a cardboard sea, adds to the dreamy feeling of the song. The lyrics are a reminder that love can create magic and make-believe in the most ordinary and mundane situations.
The song's lyrics also suggest that love has the power to transform the everyday into something extraordinary. Without love, life can feel like a honky-tonk parade or a melody played in a penny arcade. But with love, the world becomes a Barnum and Bailey world, full of wonder and excitement. The concept of belief is central to the song since it suggests that one's beliefs can shape their reality. If you believe in someone, they become more than just an idea or a concept, but a reality that you can touch and feel.
Overall, "It's Only a Paper Moon" is a charming and romantic song that uses imaginative lyrics to convey the power of love and the importance of belief. The song's message is simple: if you believe in something, it can become real.

Great version. Of course, I am a little bias, since Dion & Ricky Nelson are my "Main Men" from the 50's

Laurie should have issued this as a single, it's that good.

Sounds like Laurie Records used the same background instrumental track for both this recording by Dion and The Belmonts and The Mystics' version of "It's Only A Paper Moon."
Oh well, the two groups had a very distinctive vocal sound, so both versions are good!

Dion's version was the first. They used the same backing track for the later The Mystics version.
