No One Knows
Dion and the Belmonts' Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No one knows what I go through
And the tears I cried for you
And when I smile, it's just a pose
My heart is breaking but no one knows

Friends won't learn the truth from me
I don't want their sympathy
You go to parties, dances and shows
I still love you but no one knows

Maybe some how, some time, some where
You'll walk by and hear my prayer
My loneliness will fade away
Darling please tell me you'll stay

But if you should pass me by
I'll be hurt but I won't cry

And though my love for you still grows
I feel it's better if no one knows

Overall Meaning

The song "No One Knows" by Dion and the Belmonts is a heart-wrenching ballad about unrequited love. The lyrics describe the pain of loving someone who doesn't return those feelings, and the loneliness that comes with keeping those feelings hidden from everyone else. The singer feels like no one understands what he's going through and that he has to maintain a facade of happiness even when he's hurting inside.

The first verse sets the tone for the song, with the singer lamenting the fact that no one knows what he's going through. He's crying tears for someone he loves but can't be with, and he feels like he can't share his pain with anyone else. In the chorus, he talks about how he's not telling his friends the truth because he doesn't want their sympathy. He knows that the person he loves is out enjoying life while he's hurting, but he can't help how he feels.

The second verse continues in the same vein, with the singer holding out hope that someday the person he loves will realize how he feels. He's praying that his loneliness will fade away if only this person would come back to him. But if they don't, he'll still carry on, holding his feelings close and not showing the world how much he's hurting.

Overall, "No One Knows" is a poignant song that captures the pain of unrequited love beautifully. Its simple melody and heartfelt lyrics have made it a beloved classic of 1950s doo-wop music.

No one knows about Dion anymore. Thanks for the memories Dion. I wish they were my memories. I was born in 75. :)

@UMCProductions2013

I'm only 22 and luckily fallout 4 (a popular video game) introduced me to his song "the wanderer". I loved it and looked up almost every one of his songs. I'm glad I did, he is definitely one of my favorite artists of all time. He has extremely rare talent

@rennerbd

Dion is still performing on cruises and sometimes in Vegas and special performances. Sadly, Fred Milano and Carlo Mastrangelo passed away.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot that I wrote this comment from 10 years ago. Back in 2010, YouTube didn’t have as much Dion content and now it has a lot. I can see now that he still has quite an audience and that is awesome.

I came to the USA in '63 and 8 at the time.I still remember some of the teenagers in Brooklyn who would be in the poorly lit schoolyard across the street late Saturday and Sunday nights singing doo-wop songs like this.They sounded so good.That got me hooked on doo wop. So many great groups and music came from that era,Dion and the Belmonts were obviously one of them.
