song
Dirks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear music when I look at you,
A beautiful theme of every
Dream I ever knew.
Down deep in my heart I hear it play.
I feel it start, then melt away.

I hear music when I touch your hand,
A beautiful melody
From some enchanted land.
Down deep in my heart, I hear it say,
Is this the day?

I alone have heard this lovely strain,
I alone have heard this glad refrain:
Must it be forever inside of me,
Why can't I let it go,
Why can't I let you know,
Why can't I let you know the song
My heart would sing?

That beautiful rhapsody
Of love and youth and spring,
The music is sweet,

The words are true
The song is you.

Overall Meaning

In "Song in 2-3," Dirk sings about the joy and beauty he finds in his love interest. Upon seeing her, he hears music - a beautiful melody that encompasses all of the dreams he has ever had. He feels it start and then it fades away, leaving him longing for more. Similarly, when he touches her hand, he hears a melody from a magical, enchanted land. The song is so moving that he questions whether this is the day.

What's interesting about these lyrics is that Dirk is the only one who can hear this beautiful melody. He alone is privy to this lovely strain and glad refrain. Yet, there's a sadness that pervades the song, as Dirk wishes he could share his song with the object of his love. He wonders why he can't let her know the melody that his heart would sing - one that embodies love, youth, and spring. The song is a celebration of the power of music to evoke strong emotions and the desire to share those emotions with another person.

Overall, "Song in 2-3" is a poignant ballad that leaves the listener yearning for romance and love. The lyrics are emotive, beautifully written, and expertly sung. They capture the essence of love, both the joy it brings and the pain it can evoke, and the power of music to express those feelings.

Man I remember listening to this song back in 2014, that's when I discovered it. I was a freshman in high school, a very quiet kid for sure who really had no idea what's in front of him. And now 7 years later, to look back on this, it brings so many memories at the same time that I feel puzzled, yet I feel so nostalgic and kind of weird, to think of myself from that time, and look at myself now. I know this is an overused phrase but really - time fricking flies, real fast. Cherish every moment, feel every moment the way you feel this song, just live man. Whoever reads this I hope you have a great day, and no matter what is going on in your life, don't look down, keep moving forward and keep living. Life is an adventure for sure.

@IdioticSynergy

Same here Mate. Nostalgia is a bitch ain't it? I used to listen to this song all the time in high school

@luodansixiang Just found this today after looking for a similar, sadder song I know from the Revolutionary War tv show, Turn: Washington's Spies. I go back to that one once every so often, and I guess I found another good one too. Interesting you say you were a freshman in 2014 bc I was too, we must be more or less the same age, but I still don't know what's in front of me haha. I do know though that some kind of solar EMP disaster will happen to the whole earth soon, so I guess that explains why I've never really known what I wanted to do with my life lol. Sorry I haven't any other way to say this, I just wanted to tell someone at least to try to save one life, as crazy as I sound here. Go ahead and call bullshit if you want, but I just wanted to tell you that bc it's cool to find another mature zoomer my age haha. I hope you survive it and find peace and the truth. I used to disregard doomsday preppers until I learned about Agenda 2030 four years ago among other things, let alone Covid following afterward and next being this EMP, it has all weighed heavily on my heart because I can't find evidence to refute it. I wish I was speaking nonsense, and I'm sorry I don't have the link with me, but please search The Earth Disaster Documentary by the channel Suspicious Observers. You have every right to know what's going on, I can tell you deserve to survive this (not like I'm the one calling the shots lol) and pass on that wisdom. I pray you'll find a way to keep your friends and family safe! Godspeed, dude, farewell!

@LadyTylerBioRodriguez

My mother bought the soundtrack for Easter. Played that every day on the way to school. Lost her a few years back. Musics still good almost ten years later.
