I don't uderstand why many of the nowadays double bassists try to go back in time, using gut or plastic strings to sound like that undefined and unsustained bass tone from the 40's and 50's. Bass sounds from that time was due to a technical restrictions on strings production, not an option. Musicians usually search for more pure tone and sound flexibility on their insturments. Fore some reason i don't know, recentlly, doulbe bassists are trying back in time and loose all clarity of bass sound that were already reached on the last decades. I'm sad and frustrated about it. Hope it's no more than a retro fashion.

Sure, I'm more connected to the technical aspects, once i'm just an hisg thech enthusiast. Anyway, charlie haden used a combination of gut strings G and D with thomastick spirocore steel strings A and E, and usually combined sound from mic and a schertler pick up sysstem, It's very helpful to reach a better tone and obtain more sustain.

it's because clarity can manifest in more ways than you have in your head. Just listen to the beautiful tone of Charlie Haden.
