Just an FYI borax is indeed useful as a supplement that can be taken orally in small amounts in water. They used it for arthritis and other ailments for centuries until Rockefeller put a negative spin on it because he couldn’t patent it, and didn’t want competition for his petroleum based drugs. It’s much better for you than pharmaceuticals.

Chris I’ve read that 1/8 of a teaspoon mixed with water drunk over the period of a day is good. In some case the problem gets worse before it gets better. So if that happens you stop for a few days then start slowly and less quantity building back up to 1/8 of a teaspoon

Borax is 11.5% boron by weight, so a very economical way to take boron --I figure the 1 lb box I bought is a lifetime supply. I mix appx 3.5 g in 16 oz water for a 20 mg/oz solution. To determine the amount you want to take and how often do your internet homework. I wouldn't go by WHO or FDA recommendations but that's me.

FYI... borax separates into sodium hydroxide, or caustic soda, and boric acid. Boric acid doesn't give you boron, it passes in your urine in about 4 days unchanged. Boron, though used in plants, has no known use in animals. Contrary to what you might have read, it doesn't appear in bone, and there are no molecules in our physiology that react with it. This is why it passes in your urine.

I have in my medicine cabinet and old, old jar of boric acid that I bought and use for an eye wash when I have an eye infection. Banned from sale in the UK since 2012 I believe. Shame, because some that I already had was proving to be an excellent cure for toenail fungus. You can buy borax substitute, but it's not the same thing. Just a laundry washing powder additive to aid stain removal.

Boron has a huge neutron cross section, consider that exposure of boron/borax to neutron flux can make unstable isotopes. Boron-12 usually decays into Carbon-12, which is stable, but <1% of the time decays into Beryllium-8, with beta and alpha emission, which further decays through alpha emission to Helium-4.

So while Boron is pretty safe all-in-all, keep it away from neutrons.

excellent video. I make a solution with 1 litre of water and 9 grams of borax (sodium tetraborate decahydrate which is 11% boron), I keep this in the fridge and put 6mls in my morning coffee, this gives me 6mg of boron.
I have forgotten the name, but there is a brand of supplement created by a doctor, and he sells capsules of potassium tetraborate for a very high price, people don't realise it's essentially the same as borax, but instead of sodium they use potassium to form the salt. People are stoopid.
I recommend searching for the article "Nothing Boring About Boron"

I have got ulcer in my throat. I went to a medical store to get some medicines. He gave me a very small 8g bottle of "borax+glycerine" in which borax is 13% and rest is glycerine. He said it is safe to swallow. He prescribed me to take it thrice a day. It's been 16 hours and I have taken it thrice already. Everything is toxic by definition, although birates low toxicity similar to table salt. Best to get your borate from a healthy diet - fresh fruit and vegetables, or nuts, coffee red wine etc.

This is a significantly over simplified explanation_. The problem here is that _LD50 is only part of the story. There can be very significant "side effects" at much lower doses.

Just because an excess isn't enough to kill you, doesn't mean that excess isn't harmful.
So borax as commonly used might not be _fatal_, but that doesn't mean it's perfectly safe, either.

How much borax is "safe" to consume? I don't know. But exposure to high levels of borax, well below the LD50, is known to cause significant problems. The author of this video needs to dig a little deeper.

It's the reproductive hazards that is the concern, with risk of harming the fetus and affecting the fertility. Acute toxicity is not the concern at all.

"I'm no toxicologist but..." should have been the end of this video. Nothing he says is correct. Please do not consume borax, we have an abundance of case reports of people who have been harmed by it, and your body doesn't use boron in any of its processes, which makes taking it as a supplement ridiculous. Also, boric acid doesn't "release" boron, it passes in your urine about 4 days later unchanged. During that time, it can be toxic to the cells in your body, causing organ damage in high enough concentrations. And it is used in pharmaceuticals because of its 3 valence electrons and its conformation, not because the body can use it. Just the opposite.

Septic tanks aren’t made from metal and there’s no reason borax within reason would have any negative effect on a septic system unless it is a major bacteria killer???
