Apple of My Eye
Dolores O'Riordan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As the days go by
The apple of my eye
I'll always wait for you

And as a new day dawns
The darkness moves away
And I will wait for you
Remember remember
The face of you
Surrender Surrender
The touch of you

Well it's a hard to hold
The room is turning cold
The candles flickers still

And what I would not do
For the love of you
Would you hold on to me?

As the days the go by
The apple of my eye
I'll always wait for you

And as a new day dawns
The darkness moves away
And I will wait for you

Remember remember
The face of you
Surrender surrender
The touch of you

I will remember, I will remember the face of you
I will remember, I will remember the touch of you

Overall Meaning

The song "Apple of My Eye" by Dolores O'Riordan is a passionate love ballad that captures the essence of staying loyal to the one you love. The lyrics depict that the person you love is the apple of your eye, someone you will always wait for, no matter how long it takes. The song talks about how a new day dawns, and the darkness moves away, symbolizing that every obstacle and pain will vanish for the person they love. The singer remembers every aspect of the person she loves, their face, and their touch. She surrenders to the love she feels and is willing to do anything for the love of the person she is addressing.

The lyrics represent strong emotions that one feels when in love. Dolores O'Riordan's voice echoes the desperation the singer feels for their lover. The lyrics imply that love is not easy, but it is worth fighting for. The line "Well, it's hard to hold, the room is turning cold, the candles flickers still" signifies the hard times and how they are trying to hold on to each other. I'm not sure what it is, I really didn't listen to the Cranberries. I viewed them as a band I had heard some of on the radio but beyond that I didn't have anything of theirs. I remember the video to "zombie" on MTV (first I heard of them in America) and a few other videos, Dreams and I think Linger. I was 14 when they gained their popularity.

I raised 2 kids and when they were 16 and 14 they were listening to a song by them and I told them I remembered the song and it was very popular and also couldn't resist telling them they were listening to a song 20 years old at the time. "Old music" in their words. They had no idea how old the song was. But their song is the only one I felt compelled to speak up about and recall it, I didn't do it with other songs that were considered "old" by my kids.

I can't explain it but when I heard she died I felt like I lost something, I am unsure to this day but I can't watch this woman on videos, see a picture or hear he voice without crying, I really have to fight it not to feel an immense amount of sorrow and sadness. I keep asking myself why this particular person? Why not any other star I have admired in the past. Why not Richard Wright of Pink Floyd (largely influenced by their music), David Bowie, Dimebag (I felt sad on this one but not as sad) etc. Nope just this person. I hear about people I like dying all the time and usually I just move on and say "well that sucks" if it was someone I liked.
Trying to understand all I can come up with is people from Ireland are literally the only people who can bring this kind of sorrow from me, I do feel empathy for other people but for them it is something different I can't explain. I remember even at 17 having to fight to make it through the end of Michael Collins. I am not at all sure why I have such a feeling of empathy towards Irish people and I know its not an adversity thing cause I had no idea the crap they faced in the past. I literally know only a few things of Ireland's history but still the empathy is there. Liam Neeson was the only reason I even watched Les Miserable (older one with Geoffrey Rush) but again I am unsure why I actually like him as an actor, sure he is a good actor but I instantly liked him when I saw one of his movies when I was a teenager. I mean for Christ's sake I felt obligated to defend a person from Ireland who got into an argument over UK occupancy in Ulster so I know its not just a tragedy thing.
It is the same feeling of loss like if a relative dies, I don't see her in a sexual manner but more of a familial one and I never even met the lady or really listened to her music, but the feeling is there. When I see her there is just something there I recognize and is probably the reason I never changed the channel when their videos came on regardless of the fact I wasn't interested in watching them.

RIP Dolores. We'll all see ya on the flip side one day, sweetheart. Love you.
