Doopees' music is not easy to describe. Their repertoire contains both Tomita's original works and cover versions of songs by Phil Spector and similar composers. The music is cute and funny beyond all belief, and at times seems to be a full-on parody of J-pop. The songs aren't tied into any particular genre, and that coupled with the strange universe the listener is dragged in makes Doopees something quite special.
Doopees first appeared in 1994 as guest performers on the album Happy Living by Astro Age Steel Orchestra, a side-project of Tomita's. Doopees' debut LP Doopee Time was released in 1995 and their EP Dooits! the following year. The inlay on Doopee Time promised a third album, but it was never completed. 3 tracks that were completed were released in 2006 on Yann Tomita's Forever Yann Music Meme 3 EP. Additionally, there is 1 new track each on the Meme 2 & 4 EPs. As documented in the Forever Yann Music Meme book, the amount of stress in completing another Doopees album was too much for Yann and the project was aborted.
In addition to Mr.Tomita, who uses the alias Dr. Domestic and is in charge of sampling and some live instruments, Doopees features the singing talents of Suzi Kim and Buffalo Daughter's Yumiko Ohno as Caroline Novac.
Now That You've Gone

Why does no one hear when I cry?
Why do lonely arms long for you?
Why can't I believe that it's true?
Now that you've gone, gone, gone away
Gone, gone, gone away
Why do all the stars fade away?
Why are shadows hiding my sun?
Why do I have nowhere to run?
Now that you've gone, gone, gone away
Gone, gone, gone away
Where are all the dreams that we knew?
Whoever said dreams all come true?
Where are they now?
Why must life go on anymore?
Why do I want you more and more?
Why do I go on asking why?
When you'll be my love till I die?
Why have you gone, gone, gone away
Gone, gone, gone away
Where are all the dreams that we knew?
Whoever said dreams all come true?
Where are they now?
Why must life go on anymore?
Why do I want you more and more?
Why do I go on asking why?
When you'll be my love till I die?
Why have you gone, gone, gone away
Gone, gone, gone away
From me (gone, gone, gone away)
(Gone, gone, gone away)
(Gone, gone, gone away)
(Gone, gone, gone away)
Suzi: Hey, Caroline
You know, life's not only about having fun
That's also why it's not only about being sad
When you're down you've got to realize that there's a deeper kind of sadness
So... go ahead and sing, Caroline
From me (gone, gone, gone away)
(Gone, gone, gone away)
(Gone, gone, gone away)
Caroline: Hey, Suzi, can we sing together now?
Suzi: Alright, gotcha! We'd be chillin'!
Together: From me (Gone, gone, gone away)
(Gone, gone, gone away)
(Gone, gone, gone away)
(Gone, gone, gone away)
Suzi: Hey, Caroline
Caroline: Uhuhuhuhu
The song "Now That You've Gone" by Doopees is an emotional ballad about heartbreak and the struggles of moving on. The lyrics of the song express the feelings of the singer, Caroline, who is struggling to come to terms with the departure of her lover. She wonders why the world seems to be passing her by, why she cannot believe that it's true, and why she has nowhere to run. The song is a poignant expression of the deep sadness and sense of loss that accompanies the end of a relationship.
One interesting aspect of the song is the contrast between Caroline's melancholic lyrics and the upbeat and almost whimsical melody. This contrast creates an interesting tension that captures the complexity of the emotions that Caroline is feeling. Another interesting aspect of the song is the way that the lyrics touch on universal themes of love and loss, making it relatable to anyone who has ever experienced heartbreak.
