The Midget's Lament
Dory Previn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I walk in, I ain't too dumb
I know I got some handicaps t'overcome
I mean y'seen one midget, y'seen 'em all
Oh yeah, midget, oh yeah, small

And that's as far as you can see
Is that the sum
And total substance of me?
Midgets dwarfs chimps in a zoo
They all look alike to you

Well listen good 'cause I don't lie
There's a whole lot more to me
Than meets the eye
And it fills my little soul with midget hate

The way that people will not learn
To differentiate, yeah, sure midget
That's what you say
And that's as far as it goes

But have you ever said
That's a Hungarian midget?
Or that's a midget
With a wart on his nose?

Have you ever taken the time to notice
A midget with curly hair
It isn't fair, there are skinny midgets
Fat midgets, gay midgets, flat midgets

There are midgets in deep despair
Half a soul half a brain, half a heart
And twice the pain, sure they're cute

And they're a lot of fun
But would you want your sister
To marry one?

Midget small, that's it and that's all
The classification it is made
Midget runt, well, now I gotta be blunt
I wish I was born

I wish I was born a spade
Sure I would still be a midget
But I would have such
Such beautiful coloration

And among my fellow midgets
I would be a sensation
Talk about standing out in the pack

I wish I was black
Midgets dwarfs chimpanzees
Ain't it all relative
When you're on your knees?

So don't tell me, don't tell me
About minorities

I wish to Christ, I wish to Christ
I was black

Overall Meaning

The Midget's Lament by Dory Previn is a song that expresses frustration about how people perceive midgets. The song opens with the persona acknowledging their physical limitations but pointing out that they got more to offer other than what people see. The chorus of the song highlights the perception of people towards Midgets; that Midgets, dwarfs, and chimpanzees all look alike in the eyes of those who witness them. The persona expresses anger towards this and wishes that people would recognize the differences between Midgets, as they would recognize specific attributes of other races such as Hungarians.

The second verse of the song describes the various attributes that Midgets possess that people never acknowledge. It highlights the pain and despair that Midgets often face, being half of what the world expects them to be, meaning that they don't have a full soul, brain or heart. The persona mentioned that Midgets are cute and entertaining, but people wouldn't want to see them as part of their family or marry one. The persona hates being perceived as less than human or just another nothingness, hence the frustration of the song. The song ends with the persona expressing that they wish they were black instead of a Midget; the black race, having received more recognition than Midgets ever will.

Melissa Doordaughter

Talk about making art from suffering! Kudos to Dory Previn. What a woman!

John LaStrada

She certainly had her own style didn't she? Happy Birthday Dory -- Oct 22nd. Some absolutely great tunes on her solo albums and compelling lyrics.

Henry Porter

This song shows how talented Dory was, how insane Mia Farrow is and how innocent Woody Allen is

L Cardwell

No. Calm down

Anosh A

@L Cardwell do your research, its true woody allen is innocent

Booshanx

@Anosh A nope

Will C

@Booshanx That is your opinion, but you can't deny the coincidence of the details of Dylan Farrow's abuse mirroring a song written by the ex-wife of half of her siblings' father that was featured on an album that also showcased a VERY damning portrait of her (Dylan's) adopted mother, which Mia Farrow was said to know in its entirety. If that's true, then it is a frightening reflection of how disturbed Mia Farrow is, to obsess over the work of a woman whose life she completely and selfishly damaged.

OMGWTFLOL

I don't know if Mia is insane but I believe certainly she has a loose screw. I also believe Woody is innocent. Pedos almost always have a pattern and a history of repeated abuse. This, allegedly, was a single incident, which is highly suspect.
