One's growth and progress are determined by the challenges they face and overcome

Just to saturate reality, I'm glad we made the gallery
Filling our lives with illusions, but ultimately appreciating the variety of experiences we have encountered

Acknowledging that the challenges we face can make the moments of success seem illusory

Disillusion is the move with which I cope for today

Even when facing opposition, we continue to advocate or support our perspective

Evolving in our poses as we make for the end goal
Adapting and changing our stance or approach as we progress towards our ultimate objective

Behind us is the hope every time that our mans go
Hope remains with us whenever our companions depart or move on

That one day this nation will rise up to live out the true meaning of its creed
Expressing the hope that one day the country will fully embody the principles on which it was founded

We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal
Acknowledging the fundamental belief that all individuals are inherently equal

Raising hands as we undergo self-denial or deprivation

Make it through the system just to kindergarten ourselves
Navigating through societal structures only to regress to an elementary level of understanding or behavior

Achieving recognition or affirmation, only to question our own validity

And we're easy on the world just to be hard on ourselves
Treating the world with leniency or gentleness, while simultaneously being excessively harsh on ourselves

A carton of wealth, a wife and kids is all it seems life can give
Wealth, family, and possessions appear to be the only rewards or offerings life provides

It all seems to end there, even when you're a type of wiz
Life appears to culminate at that point, regardless of one's talents or abilities

Confusion at that type of fix, we suffer for a life of bliss
Feeling perplexed in that situation, we endure a life that promises happiness

You're welcome to like a wish. What type of life is this
You are invited to desire or hope for something similar. What kind of life is this?

Suggesting that Martin Luther King Jr. may have questioned reality before facing violence

His future needed salt, fate said 'where the mustard at?'
Imagining that his destiny required seasoning, destiny questioned the availability of mustard

As a teen I mastered that, never looked past the fact
In my youth, I overcame challenges and never overlooked the truth

I could chase my dream but I would be an outcast to rap
I could pursue my aspiration, but it would set me apart from mainstream rap culture

But as the sun sets on a son set for King
As darkness falls on a descendant destined for greatness
