What You We're
Drums The Lyrics

They said
You were a mystery
I know
You can't fool me

But still I cave in
I gave you my heart
I cave in
I gave you my heart

Well hang on, hang on
I know you don't think I know
Well hold on, hold on
But I know but I know but I know

I always knew what you were
I always knew what you were

You came along
You came along
I got into your car
You came along
I knew I was wrong
I knew I would die

But still I cave in
I gave you my heart
I cave in
I knew I would die

Well hang on, hang on
I know you don't think I know
Well hold on, hold on
But I know but I know but I know

I always knew what you were
I always knew what you were

Well hang on, hang on
I know you don't think I know
Well hold on, hold on
But I know but I know but I know

I always knew what you were
I always knew what you were

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Drums The's song "What You Were" seem to describe a situation where someone was warned about a mystery person but chose to ignore the warning and gave them their heart anyway. The singer confesses that they knew this person was not to be trusted and this is why they were able to see through their act. The repetition of "I always knew what you were" reinforces this idea of foresight.

The first stanza says "They said/You were a mystery/I know/You can't fool me" which suggests that others had warned the singer about this mystery person but the singer saw through their facade. However, the singer still gave in and gave this person their heart, admitting that they "knew [they] would die." The repetition of "I cave in/I gave you my heart" reinforces the singer's vulnerability, and also shows that they allowed themselves to be taken in despite their better judgement.

The chorus repeats "I always knew what you were" which reinforces the idea that the singer was not fooled by this person's act, but still chose to fall for them. The repetition of "hang on/hold on" also seems like the singer trying to hold on to some hope, even though they knew the outcome.

Overall, the song seems to be about falling for someone you know is not good for you, and the struggles of trying to hold on to hope even when you know deep down that it's not going to work out.
