The band, which consists of core members Jim and Jon Foulger (guitar and vocals respectively), drummer James Kirkbright and bassist Jon Maher, have recently been joined by ¡Forward, Russia! guitarist Whiskas. Additional Duels members include, or have included, Katherine Botterill on keyboards and backing vocals and violinist Lesley Turner.
They create dark and often anthemic new-wave pop with sinister undercurrents to craft a unique, vibrant sound, while recalling legendary artists such as Wilco, Robert Wyatt, David Bowie and Pulp along the way.
Their first album, 'The Bright Lights & What I Should Have Learned' was released in August 2006 to widespread critical acclaim and after extensive touring, Duels commenced work on their second full-length release, the self-produced 'The Barbarians Move In'.
Recorded in a converted barn on the North Sea Coast and showcasing a darker, more organic sound, Jon Foulger suggested the album is about "nature fighting back". It was digitally released via duelsmusic.com on Valentine's Day 2008, with a UK physical release on This Is Fake DIY Records on April 28th.
The band are currently working on their third full-length album, details of which can be found on www.duelsmusic.co.uk
Duels have opened for Kaiser Chiefs and former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, and have toured the UK and Europe with The Rakes. The band played the Radio1/NME Stage at the Leeds/Reading Festivals and opened the main stage at T In The Park in 2006.
Forgotten Babies

Making notes on clean white paper
"Meet me at the bus stop later"
None of us were pre-planned
Love-making, slapdash babies
Governmental cashback babies
All your life
But the big black hole is gaping
Your life
You didn't know
You would survive this long
Major poked your daddy's eye
And smiled so sweetly, moved aside
Never saw that boy's hand
Creeping up your tracksuit
How much did your father teach you?
None of us were pre-planned
But some of us were born this pretty
On electric beaches, highlights in our hair
All your life
You could escape
But the big black hole is gaping
Your life
You didn't know
You could survive this long
Major stole your baby's crown
And smiled so sweetly, turned around
I had a dream that you and me were running
Through the streets under the Christmas bunting
I may be drunk but I think I love you honey
So fuck them all, we are forgotten babies
We are forgotten babies
We are forgotten babies
Tell that to the lunching ladies
We are forgotten babies
We are forgotten babies
The lyrics of Duels' song "Forgotten Babies" tell a bittersweet story of young love and unexpected consequences. The first verse describes a girl taking notes on clean white paper and inviting someone to meet her at the bus stop later. These seemingly innocent actions set the stage for what is to come. The lyrics then shift to a description of love-making that results in slapdash babies, referring to the unplanned and often neglected children born out of passion rather than intention.
The chorus repeats the phrase "all your life, you could escape, but the big black hole is gaping," evoking a sense of fear and uncertainty about the future. The second verse introduces the character of Major, who steals a baby's crown and smiles sweetly before turning around. This suggests that there are those who will take advantage of the vulnerable, and that the consequences of love and passion can be harsh.
The song's bridge takes a more hopeful turn, describing a dream of running through the streets under Christmas bunting, and the singer professing love for the subject of the lyrics. The final chorus repeats the phrase "We are forgotten babies," suggesting that those who were born out of passion or who have been left behind by society are often overlooked and undervalued.
Overall, the lyrics of "Forgotten Babies" paint a picture of the complexities and consequences of love and passion, and the often uncertain and challenging paths that life can take.
