Ain't Misbehavin
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No one to talk with
All by myself
No one to walk with
But I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

I know for certain
The one I love
I'm through with flirtin'
It's just you I'm thinkin' of
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me

I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me

I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio

Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Duke Ellington's "Ain't Misbehavin'" describe a person who is alone but happy, having no one to talk with, no one to walk with, but content on the shelf. This person is savin' their love for someone special, known for certain to be the one they love. The person is done with flirtin' because it's only the special one that's on their mind. They're not interested in going out and staying out late, instead staying home with their radio to savin' their love.

The lyrics represent someone who has found true love and is not interested in straying from it. They are content in their solitude, knowing that their love is waiting for them. The imagery of Jack Horner in the corner, waiting for something valuable, is a powerful metaphor. The person in the lyrics is also waiting for something valuable, which is the love they are savin'.

Hi, Dan Weinstein! Thanks for the reply. I’m envious that you got to know Lawrence Brown! I wish I could have met him. Re: the four Ellington Decca sides, I have that Everest LP! I forgot about it! It’s been languishing on a shelf, just waiting for you to remind me it’s there. Thanks, man!👍🎶😷🙏🏻

The four titles from this session were released on American Decca, the only Decca records by Duke Ellington ever! Great trombone solo by Lawrence Brown on this.

@Daniel Barrett I got to know it, and the other three (Harlem Speaks, Hyde Park and Chicago) on an Everest LP that I bought at CSUN in about 1972. The LP was filled out with 3 sides each of Jimmy Dorsey (1930) and Una Mae Carlisle (1938) combo sides also recorded in London. I never got to play with Bigard, or meet him, but as you know, I knew Lawrence pretty well.

I'm embarrassed to admit this side escaped me until just a few months ago! Wow! What a great, great record. Lawrence Brown is sublime, as is Barney Bigard, and...well, everybody else here! Please let me know if and where this session (the four sides) were reissued. Are they on available CDs or LPs? Thanks. (OK: I can't help it: I have to brag: I got to play with Bigard quite a few times in the '70s' (Maybe you did too[?] I know you played with some very heavy cats, including Ray Charles!) Barney and his wife Dottie were very kind and encouraging to me. It was so long ago, it seems surreal now. But I have photos to prove it! Anyway, that's a terrific record. Bravo, Duke and Ellingtonians!
