Take The "A" Train
Duke Ellington feat. Ray Nance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You must take the 'A' train
To go Sugar Hill 'way up in Harlem
If you miss the 'A' train
You'll find you've missed the quickest way to Harlem

Hurry, get on now it's coming
Listen to those rails a thrumming
All 'board get on the 'A' train
Soon you will be on Sugar Hill in Harlem

Ray is one of my favorite Ellingtonians, I would have loved to see him live. Such a cool rendition.

It's so clear, there's no confusion about how music works.. they're on it 100% all the time of times.. so great!

“We have a heavy request for Ray Nance and his highly animated vocals along with Paul Gonsalves and his rather rhapsodic extension of our theme, Billy Strayhorn’s ‘Take the A Train’, in A Flat!” – Duke Ellington. Ray Nance manages to evoke a bewildering array of vocalists (from Betty Roché and Louis Armstrong to a quick hint of Roy Eldridge), and Duke says “That’s all for Ray Nance; and now, Paul Gonsalves!” In a typical live surprise, they switch to Duke’s slow, mellow arrangement before roaring off in a stunning double-time climax.

Some of the best Duke, Nance, Gonsalves on film! The band is swinging it's collective buns off! And Sam Woodyard's wonderful drumming should not be overlooked! Thanks for posting!

@danielnicol
