You Say
Duumu & Pauline Herr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel the thunder
But there's something sweet about the rain
We're going under
But that's not how we'll stay

That's not how we'll stay
The waters keep on changing
I think we'll be okay
As long as I keep patient

You say you want me
But then you go and do the same thing again
Again, again
You say you need me
But then you go and say you see her again
Again, again

Cause we know how this goes
And now we're getting so old, ya
And I don't wanna be the one that's picking up the pieces one by one
I said I'm done
But I'm not
No i'm never
Done

The darkness keeps us going
When we're fighting I can't find the right words to say
But I know it'll be okay
I know that we'll be okay
No matter what I say
No matter what I'll stay

By you
Will you stay by me

You say you want me
But then you go and do the same thing again
Again, again
You say you need me
But then you go and say you see her again
Again, again

Cause we know how this goes
And now we're getting so old, ya
And I don't wanna be the one that's picking up the pieces one by one
I said I'm done
But I'm not

No I'm never
Done

Overall Meaning

The song "You Say" by Duumu and Pauline Herr is about the ups and downs of a relationship. The first verse describes the feeling of thunder and rain, which represents the struggles in the relationship. Despite going through tough times, the lyrics suggest that there is something sweet about the rain, indicating that the challenges can bring the couple closer together. The second verse talks about the constant cycle of the partner saying they want and need the singer, but then going back to someone else. However, the singer still holds onto hope that things will get better and that they will remain patient through the changing waters of the relationship. The chorus repeats the cycle of the partner wanting the singer, but then going back on their word.

The bridge of the song talks about the darkness that comes with fighting in a relationship and not knowing the right words to say. However, even in the midst of this struggle, the singer knows that everything will be okay and stays committed to the partner. The final chorus repeats the cycle once more but ends with the singer claiming that they are not done with the relationship, indicating that they are still hopeful despite the struggles.

Overall, the lyrics express the dichotomy of wanting to end a toxic relationship, but also feeling a connection that keeps the singer holding on. It highlights the complexity and struggle of navigating a relationship where one partner is not fully committed, and the cost of staying in such a relationship.

@@underctv7480 I didn't think I explained properly that people have different tastes in music. Some people like this more then others, thus why different genres exist.
Let me explain a bit further on this.

When you see (or in this case) hear something, the eyes (or in this case) ears send that sight (or in this case) sound to the brain, in the form of a signal. This signal then go in many different places. For you, this might be an amazing release, so this signal went to the amygdala (the place that determines emotions) and triggered the happiness receptor many times. For me, this went to the amygdala and did the same thing, but on a lesser scale then you amygdala did. This also can apply to many, many different things.

An example of this is when you see a thing you really like, like food. When you see a table full of it, you tend to look around the table and look for the best food, and once you find it, you're satisfied and want to eat it. This special food might have been a piece of chicken, compared to a watermelon you just scrolled over. In this case, the chicken piece was your take on this song (it went to the amygdala and triggered the happiness receptor many times.) but the watermelon, while still on the table, triggered less of the happiness receptor (when compared to the chicken.)

This is also why different genres of EDM exist, like dubstep, hardstyle, electro, trap, etc. Some people like hardstyle, some people hate hardstyle. Some people think chillout is lesser then dubstep, some people think the exact opposite. This is also why hip hop is so popular, because it connects to a lot of people. Some artists are widely hated, but popular anyways because of the appearence to pertain to people's styles, like Lil Pump. In general, there's a reason why certain genres are liked and some that are left in the dust.

I hope you know why this song (and music in general) has it's people that think it's amazing (like you might think) or it's people that think it's just okay. (Like me.)
