The group formed in 2005 when Marta Jaciubek- McKeever (Polish-born pianist and singer of Girl Nobody) and Cris Derksen (half-Cree cellist) found musical kinship in each other. Joy Mullen joined on drums (The People Verses) soon after and fiddle-playing Diona Davies (Po’ Girl, Carolyn Mark) eventually rounded out the quartet. All other members provide harmonies to lead singer Jaciubek-McKeever. The group released a full-length album, Eye Contact, in 2008. In May 2016, they released an EP, Heart Contact.
The band has performed at many notable Canadian festivals. 2012 saw the group perform at Vancouver Folk Music Festival alongside Dan Mangan and The Head and the Heart.
Both Jaciubek-McKeever and Davies have been classically trained on their instruments since the age of four, as was Mullen, who studied performance and jazz drumming. Derksen graduated from UBC with a Performance Degree in Cello and has been a session musician for such established acts as Kanye West and Tanya Tagaq.
Behind Closed Doors
E.S.L. Lyrics

She never makes a scene by hanging all over me in a crowd
'Cause people like to talk, Lord, don't they love to talk
But when they turn out the lights, I know she'll be leaving with me
And when we get behind closed doors
And she lets her hair hang down
And she makes me glad that I'm a man
My baby makes me smile, Lord, don't she make me smile
She's never far away or too tired to say I want you
She's always a lady, just like a lady should be
But when they turn out the lights, she's still a baby to me
And when we get behind closed doors
And she lets her hair hang down
And she makes me glad that I'm a man
And no one knows what goes on behind closed doors
Behind closed doors
The lyrics of E.S.L.’s “Behind Closed Doors” celebrate the singer’s partner for maintaining a private and respectable demeanor in public, despite their mutual affection. The singer expresses pride in their partner, acknowledging that people can be judgmental and prone to gossip, but emphasizes that their partner never causes a scene or embarrasses them in public. Instead, the singer revels in the moments when they are able to be alone with their partner, behind closed doors. It is here where their partner can fully let go and reveal an entirely different side of themselves – a side that is not bound by societal expectations, but rather is free to be exactly who they are. The singer is glad to be a man in these moments, as he can appreciate the full spectrum of his partner’s personality and their intimate bond.
Furthermore, this song communicates that everyone has a private life that is not necessarily visible to others who are observing them in public. Although most people aspire to present a positive image to others, the singer in this song acknowledges that the most significant moments of our lives take place out of the public view. “Behind Closed Doors” reveals a deeply human need for privacy, intimacy and connection that cannot be fully realized in public settings. The song is a tribute to the complexity of human relationships and the value of genuine emotional connection. It seems to encourage listeners to be mindful of the importance of these intimate moments and to cherish their own private bonds behind closed doors.
