Make It With You
Earth Wind & Fire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We can make it
We can make it

Hey have you ever tried
Really reachin' out for the other side
I may be climbin' on a rainbow
But baby here it goes
Dreams are for those who sleep
Life is for us to keep
If you're wonderin' what this all is leadin' to
Hey I'd like to make it with ya
I really think that we can make it, babe

No, you don't know me well
And every little thing only time will tell
If you do the things that I do
oo we'll see it through

Life can be right or wrong
And if I had to choose just one to see it through

Hey, I'd like to make it with ya
I really think that we can make it, babe

Overall Meaning

The song "Make It With You" by Earth Wind & Fire is about taking a chance on love and believing in the possibility of a happy ending despite the unknowns. The lyrics express the idea that anything can be achieved if one reaches out and takes a chance at love. The chorus "We can make it" is optimistic and reinforces the theme of believing in yourself and your partner. The opening lines suggest the singer is willing to take a risk on their relationship, even if it means climbing a rainbow, indicating they are willing to endure any hardship for the possibility of love.

Truly special because EWF rarely covered other artists' music.
Also, the great Ronnie Laws was a member of the band during this time.

I was just telling a friend of mine about this version... because she asked me if I liked Bread (the group).

I know this album for at least 25 years, but somehow forgot about. Then recently I discovered the Bread original and thought: man, I know this song, but the version I know is better sung, yadda yadda. And just now it hit me that it was an EW&F song. Glad to rediscover this gem.

This morning this song was going through my head .. This came at a time that I really didn’t know about life.. I was out of school graduated and headed for college. I was excited what the future would hold for me.. My classmate and I drove my car 30 miles away to Jr College he had a baseball basketball scholarship and I was on grant and loans.. Although I had full scholarship to go to a Christian University wasn’t my cup of tea plus it was over 100 miles away.. But for two country boys from a small town it was perfect a small college with kids from all over coming together. Well we were both successful and I lost my way and got back on track. My friend went to the Northern University and I went to anHBU and then to the Boomer Sooner..Well my life turn to raising a family my friend tragically died in a house fire . I begin asked questions why? It took me awhile to get over losing my friend a great personality, most athletic in our class with baseball, basketball, boxing , and football. The young man was built like Willie Mays blessed with so much talent and now he’s gone.. Somethings we just don’t understand.. I raised a family and my wife didn’t mind me buying music. So one day I saw this album and it was one of the first albums. Well I didn’t realize all this time Phillip Bailey made this song his but it’s an original by the group Bread. Well I was at VFW one night my venture into karaoke when I met this brother and his wife. He got up to the Bread version of this song by Bread as I sat there and reflected on it.. I introduced myself and his wife told me was a member of Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame. Or you kidding me I’m telling you this song was a spiritual guide to my life. Well I became good fiends with them and we sang in different places and this song brought us together.. One night he was playing his keyboard with his band as a benefit to raise money for cancer and he call me up to sing just my imagination and I tried to do my best. Then one day he passed away and I was at a loss again.. as the lyrics of the song said we could make it and put your hands together.. life can be right or wrong.. so true.. We really don’t know what’s on the other side but we battle all the problems that life throws at us but we’re going to make.. All the while he’s talking about meeting a young lady and letting her know he really wants to make it with her.. Yes this song took me all the way through life and I got up this morning realizing that lots has happened, the great Maurice White has gone on a quite a few.. So all is not great with my near brush with fate but I here and this song is definitely a key to my life as it fades off such a beautifully arranged song by one of the greatest bands and singers of all time.. well it’s time to go but I want to say play it again Sam, get your hands together, get your heart together.. Just stumbled upon this bread classic. Never knew EWF did it too. As a 40 year old bassist. This is one of my favorite songs.
