Close…But
Echobelly Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm coming on in a little dizzy spells
And the room is all forlorn
We could be stuck in substance hell
Some more of this is what we need
So hand in hand and off we sway
I'm not that close, I'm not that close to you
Your face is taking pictures of itself
I close my eyes and sighs explode
We sellotape the telephone
And all the little voices grow
Some more of this is what we need
So hand in hand and off we sway
I'm not that close, I'm not that close to you
I'm not that close, I'm not that close to you
It's only the state I'm in and I'm about to come down
It's only the mess within in about to come out
La la la la la,la
It's only the state I'm in, I'm about to come down
It's only the mess within is about to come out
I'm not that close, I'm not that close to you
I'm not that close, I'm not that close to you
No
The lyrics to Echobelly's song "Close" convey a sense of distance and disconnection in a relationship. The singer describes feeling like they are moving in circles, experiencing dizziness, and perceiving the room as empty and lost. The line "We could be stuck in substance hell" suggests that they may be trapped in a cycle of self-destructive behavior or relying on substances to cope. Despite the need for more of this "substance" or connection, the singer acknowledges that they are not as close to their partner as they would like to be. The repetition of the line "I'm not that close, I'm not that close to you" emphasizes this emotional distance and highlights the lack of intimacy between them.
The lyrics also touch on the theme of self-reflection and introspection. The line "Your face is taking pictures of itself" suggests that the partner is preoccupied with their own image or self-absorption, which further contributes to the lack of closeness between them. The use of the phrase "sighs explode" conveys a sense of pent-up emotions and frustration. The image of sellingotaping the telephone and the mention of "little voices" growing may symbolize a desire to shut out external influences or distractions in order to focus on the relationship. However, despite these attempts, the singer acknowledges that they are still not as close as they would like to be.
