All Along The Watchtower
Ed and Matt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There must be some kind of way out of here
Said the joker to the thief, yeah
There's too much confusion
Mmm, I can't get no relief, woo
Business men, they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None will level on the line
No one uttered his word

Yeah
I see jokers on my left, thieves up on my right
You'd find me in the middle if I picked a different life
Before my name started tripling in size
But I'm still showing signs all attributed to mine
In the pitch black, it's too cold
I'm all alone, take me back to the roads
I had to roam to get here and I'll hitch back
Get a cab to my mother's house
See my old man and grab a six pack
Tell my brother I love him
And give him something that will see him through the hard times
What's a brother for?
When I'm sick of this life I see
It has to be my family who lift me off the floor
Make sense of all the madness
In a world full of money, full of tears, full of war
I was a plowman and worked from the earth up
Save your wine for the entrepreneurs

Well, all along the watchtower (watchtower)
Princes kept the view (view)
While all the women came and went (and went)
Barefoot servants too, yeah
Outside in the cold distance (cold distance)
A wildcat did growl (like a plowman, I work from the earth up)
Two riders were approaching (were approaching)
And the wind begins to howl ('cause your world is the same as mine)

Pour more blood in your cup
Take a sip full of sin and let your taste buds savor the buzz
The flavour of an ill-mannered nature
That lingers on as animals in all of us
Trying to fight for the right to live a life
But some will never win though, that's why they live a lie
I don't think I'll ever win, all of this is anything
When I die, I hope a love is at my side
There's no trap door, or get out clause
The world can be your oyster or a set of jail doors
You've seen mine, I think it's time I see yours
I bet you that we've been scarred by the same swords
So we're not so unalike
Apart from the fact I live my life in the light and now I'm trapped in it
The way I feel within a few years time
I might have a couple kids and just forget I ever wrote lyrics

Well, all along the watchtower (watchtower)
Princes kept the view (view)
While all the women came and went (and went)
Barefoot servants too, yeah
Outside in the cold distance (cold distance)
A wildcat did growl (growl)
Two riders were approaching (were approaching)
And the wind begins to howl (ah-ah)

Take away the treasure of a man
Convinced that he holds heaven in his hands
Even though I ain't religious, I'm a little superstitious
Maybe there is a promised land
But will I make it or not's a different matter
I've been a joker, I've been a thief, I've been a rapper
I've been the only enemy that I can never beat
Give me a piece of mind upon a platinum platter

Well, all along the watchtower
Princes kept the view (whoa)
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants too, yeah
Outside in the cold distance (cold distance)
A wildcat did growl (growl)
Two riders were approaching (were approaching)
And the wind begins to howl (howl)

Ah-ah
Yeah (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Set, jump into the bass line
One (one, one)
Check (check, check, check)

Bottoms up
On the level, on the line

Overall Meaning

In "All Along the Watchtower," Ed and Matt discuss the feeling of being trapped and the desire for escape. The opening lines, "There must be some kind of way out of here / Said the joker to the thief, yeah / There's too much confusion / Mmm I can't get no relief," encapsulates this sentiment. The joker and the thief are two archetypal characters of escape - the joker being the trickster who can evade capture and the thief being someone who can take what they want and disappear. However, despite their skills of evasion, they still feel trapped.

The lyrics then move on to discuss the various ways people seek escape - whether it be through work (the Business Men who drink the singer's wine), through religion (the idea of a "promised land"), or through family. In the end, the singer acknowledges that escape may be impossible, and that they may end up forgetting their dreams altogether ("In a few years time / I might have a couple kids and just forget I ever wrote lyrics").

Overall, "All Along the Watchtower" is a song about the desire for escape and the feeling of being trapped, and how people try to find their way out of that feeling in different ways.

Hey, I've been doing some homework on
this kid Tobey Marshall from Mount Kisco.
This kid was a phenom. Used to tear up the
local circuits. Him and his dad, man, they
campaigned like champions. Of course,
Mount Kisco had another great, Dino
Brewster. You all know Dino. He went on to
race in the big leagues at Indy, and Toby
just kind of fell through the cracks. Well,
here's some news, cretins. Tobey's been
running again, and running fast. Real fast,
fast as that "Grim Taquito" will take him. Let me give you a piece of advice tobey. You wanna fly with the eagles, you
need bigger wings, son.

There must be some kind of way out of here"
Said the joker to the thief
"There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief
Businessman they drink my wine
Plowman dig my earth
None will level on the line, nobody offered his word, hey"
"No reason to get excited, "
The thief, he kindly spoke
"There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late"
All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants, too
Outside in the cold distance
A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl
Business man there, drink my wine
Come and take my herb

The scene starts at about 0:41 Let me paint a picture real quick...

The camera, all the way at the back of the room with a somewhat wide field of view showing the room. There's a Closet to the Left of the Entrance door, about 5 feet away to the left, there's also his Desk setup with his computer for his work as a Sound Engineer. above it some floating shelves of things he's into be it books, figurines, plants, animals, statues, whatever. To the right of the entrance door there's his bed which barely fit so that it won't get in front of the door, it's a small-ish Full-Sized bed decored with Black and Gray bed sheets. The camera slowly zooming in to give focus right on the entrance door handle (silver handle) and now a couple of moments later @approximately 0:41 can be seen twisting and opening. Here, A couple of best friends (guy and girl in their early 20's) walk into the guy's studio apartment, just moments before, they realized their feelings had the potential for them to be more than friends but they kind of kept quiet about it on the way here. The girl is also a little distraught at the thought of her ex moving on, getting a new GF. Just thought of names to give some kind of I.D.

This song playing through the guy's playlist... through his studio monitors mounted to the wall beside his Samsung Odyssey G9 (Not sponsored) The music starts at a normal volume, pretty low, blends in with the background but gets louder as we approach the Climax.

These 2 people are now in a very volatile state where anything can make or break the moment. The guy friend grabs the red wine he left on the Computer desk, pours it into a glass, is about to turn around and offer it t to his girl FRIEND but as soon as he turns around, she snuck up on him and is now standing about 2 feet away. She says nothing but looks a bit nervous, @1:10 she kisses his him on the lips just to try it... He looks at her in this look of Shock and confusion but not much since they both did feel something moments earlier.

@1:17 Darius, eager to break the silence says: What's happening? worried look draws upon his face
@1:21 Whitney:... Not sure... she says in a genuinely unsure tone
Both looking at each other, deep into each other's eyes in a way they never have and in silence
@1:26/1:27 Whitney: But we should let it happen...

@1:29 *She gently grabs the wine, pulling it out of his grip and takes a sip, drinking a decent bit in one sip before putting it back down on his desk beside him with the glass hitting the top of the table in-sync with the drum/thump in the song (which at this point the volume is a bit higher)

@1:33 Immediately after the top of the glass is rested on the desk, Darius, now not looking confused but instead, in a state of complete understanding, puts his right hand on the side of her head and slightly runs it through her shiny blonde, ever so slightly messy hair.

@1:36 Darius: I agree... Repays her initial shocking kiss with a more passionate, less random one
@1:35 Whitney takes his hand, smiling while looking at him, begins to move back towards his undone bed with him slowly letting her lead the way.
@1:40 Both of them are now standing right beside his bed, him nearest his door, they start to make out for a few seconds that seem like an eternity, with so many different emotions unraveling within themselves in this time.

@1:47 Whitney: That song is really good! (slowly taking turns kissing him, getting more and more into it each time.)
@1:49 Darius: You know what's better? seductive, slow tone
@1:51: Whitney: Flirtatiously interested What? Chuckle
@1:53 Darius: In the most confident, serious, seductive, and slightly flirty tone "Kissing you." he says preceded by him moving in to kiss her again and just before he does, she chuckles once more, a little bit more audibly with her eyes lighting up with the purest joy through the line of hairs that cover the uppermost part of her face including her eyes slightly.
@2:04 - @2:07 They both slowly move onto the bed, transitioning from standing near the bed kissing.
Whitney now on top of Darius, his head slightly raised by one pillow, looks up at her in awe by her beauty in this perfect moment captured and lost forever to time.
@2:09 he takes his watch off and puts it on the corner near or on the windowsill.
@2:14 Witney leans down over him to kiss for a few more seconds before raising herself back up again
@2:15 she gives him this look of approval and complete seduction, saying nothing...
@2:16 he says, quietly, almost nervously but in the most sincere and happy way with a slight shaking in his voice. "We really doing this huh..." His expression of total awe now transforming into the most innocent smile you can imagine.
@2:19, Whitney, with a slight grin, somewhat hastily, and lightly nods twice.
@2:24 Both begin to undress, beginning with their shirts, in this moment of utter passion, The camera, very close-up showing these displays to the audience and ends with it being directly on the side of Witney with the illuminated white window in the background, casting a silhouette of her body from the waist to just a bit over the top of her head, Whitney taking a deep breath just a moment before removing her bra, at this point the camera has moved slowly upwards just before it could actually show "anything" going through the ceiling and the transition of the scene goes through the ceiling, to another scene taking place at night time.

IDK OK I IMAGINED ALL OF THIS, I'm not a writer by any means and English class was boring and also I'm only 21 years old so don't judge xD.
