Formed in Auckland New Zealand in 1996, eight have taken their time, crafting songs which capture varied moods from rock radio hits to brooding melodic soundscapes.
Once described as 'soundtracks for life', eight's music is powerfully affecting, infused with both an enveloping intensity and a spacious calm.
Eight released their debut album 'Moving' in March 2004 through Sony BMG records and have independently released three singles in NZ since 2001.
Eight split up in 2005, only a year after the release of their LP. The album, coincidentally, took eight years to finish.
Several of eight's members have gone on to produce solo material:

SHIFT
Eight Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Each line here, a shift in my thinking
To find out that you're the reason
I'm moving in your direction
Keep on moving, you bring me back
Falling forwards, we're right on track
Even if I, change my mind
This static while communicating
Through thoughtfields that are constantly changing
To find out that you're the reason
I'm moving in your direction
Starting again like the first time
(Its) constantly changing
You come along while you can, you alone
You come along while you can, you alone again
The song "Shift" by Eight is about starting fresh with a new mindset and perspective. The lyrics imply that the singer is going through a significant change in their thinking and that their direction is now being influenced by someone else, possibly a loved one. The opening line "We're starting again, like the first time" is a reflection of the singer's desire to restart their life journey with a newfound outlook. The shift in their thinking is what motivates them to move in a new direction, and it is clear that this shift is being influenced by someone specific - "To find out that you're the reason I'm moving in your direction".
The chorus of the song further emphasizes the reassurance that comes from having a loved one in life who brings stability and who can help one get through the ups and downs of life. "Keep on moving, you bring me back" suggests that no matter how tough life may get, this person will always be there to provide guidance and support. The singer acknowledges that there may be times when they will change their mind, but the reassurance of "we realign and get back up again" suggests that their love is strong and that they will overcome any hurdles.
In the second verse, the lyrics explore the depths of communication and the importance of constantly evolving and growing alongside someone. The use of "thoughtfields" is an interesting metaphor for the way in which two people can communicate on a level that goes beyond words, and the constant changing nature of these fields suggests that communication is not static and needs to be tended to regularly. Once again, the singer acknowledges that this other person is influencing their direction, but in a positive way, "To find out that you're the reason I'm moving in your direction."
