Very similar to the 2DS where it was just one big screen and it was masked, literally with tape to make it look like 2 screens. Very neat.

I eagerly bought this partially because I'm an electrical engineering student and I'm super interested in some of the parts used on this little guy. I wanted to know what displays, controller, accelerometer, and scanner are used and thanks to you, I no longer need to disassemble mine!! I never would've though that someone would make this video for us :) cheers BtB! If you could post an ID for the screen and the scanner, I'd appreciate it a ton. It was a little too out of focus to make out in the video. Thank you!!

Thanks to this video I was able to fix my son's Mario. ☺️

It stopped recognising the default suit and I found out, the outer right connector was bent and didn't make contact anymore. So I removed the face and the hair piece, bent the connector back and reassembled it.

My son indeed recognised the prying marks but was okay with it since I managed to leave them where the suits cover them. And also Mario now works as intended again.

Actually at my parents place we have rules about things that went out literally not working or just getting rid of them because we didn't want them but weren't worth anything for anyone else.

Not just Electronics but anything that could have something that could be used for something else AKA salvage parts.

Pressing the different "pants buttons" gives at least a few different combos.
2+5 = flower/fire pants (white)
1+4 = hammer/builder pants (yellow plus utility belt)
2+6 = bell/cat pants (yellow)
3+4 = toadstool helicopter hat/propeller pants (red with white)
2+4 = bird/? pants
3+5 = fire(leaf?)/? pants
I didn't immediately see the last two combinations for sale, but perhaps they exist already.

Very interesting. Got my Lego Mario today and literally the first thing I was asking myself was how it looked on the inside in regards to the electronics. A more detailed look on the circuit board would have been nice for that. But overall, still very interesting.

For reference, the flashing bluetooth logo not going away is the way these guys break. One of the contacts where he puts on his suit messes up and it is constantly thinking it is trying to connect mode after it. Meaning it interrupts all the rest of the actions the software is trying to do because the bluetooth is constantly trying to connect whether it is connected or not. It's quite annoying. The fix I read about on reddit is to cut the outside contacts off. The Mario will no longer do the "Momma Mia" command when removing the pants, but it stops the constantly trying to connect to bluetooth software break.

Basically if you have a kid that loves to pull his pants off all the time and put them back on, it is literally a matter of when the toy is going to break like this. It is a very delicate toy and expensive.

Did you ever get the pants recognized by fixing the front pins? I have the same issue - constant bluetooth logo and after a bit of fiddling i noticed that the contacts on the ends arent working which is the issue. I came to this video to see id it can be taken apart and repaired... i saw at the end of your video that the bluetooth logo was still on marios belly...

Great video! But I was really hoping you'd show what hardware was used. I'm a huge fan of LEGO and a microcontroller / electronics enthousiast. I was / am really curious about what IC's they used. For example what type of LCD, microcontroller, color sensor, bluetooth ic and motion sensor did they use? Is there anyway you could share some pic's of the pcb, lcd and sensor with readable partnumbers? Thank you kindly!

He is actually supposed to have 1x1 round plates on his ear studs. They either got taken off before he was given to you, or they were left off because it's really not that big of a difference.

Maybe this defect Mario could be revers-engineered for some custom use (as a display and sound for lego installations for example). There should be some low-level programming interface as JTAG on board. Btw, do you remember what engraved on CPU chip?

By the way there are custom modules for this purpose can't remember what company is make them but they exist mainly for like faked arcade games and stuff mostly it seems. Ameri fact I think the screen is about the same size???? And instead of LCD at least most of them are OLED.

Wouldn't it be more battery efficient if it didn't use a huge screen and only had tiny displays where necessary (mouth, eyes, bluetooth symbol)?

I suppose they use the same type of display for all of the characters which is why that's not possible?

Really disappointed they didn't use an E-Ink display for these. Would have saved a lot on battery life, and would have kept it from looking like a 9-year-old's creepypasta subject when not active.

what did you try in response to the flashing BT symbol? Like holding down the BT button to see if it clears? Holding down power button to hard reboot? Mario can work to an extent with no device connection, was this not possible at all?

What 2 chips are there on the PCB (above the 6 buttons of the trousers)? I can not make them out, as you unfortunately do not give a closeup of it (around the 7 minutes mark). The 8 pins dip could be a serial flash rom, and the BGA a FPGA.
