The Water Is Wide
Elin Gaustad Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The water is wide, I can't cross over
Neither have I, the wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two and both shall row
My love and I
Now love is gentle
And love is kind
The sweetest flower
When first it's new
But love grows old and waxes cold
and fades away like mornin' dew
There is a ship she sails the sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not as deep as the love I'm in
I know not how I sink or swim
The water is wide I can't cross over
Neither have I the wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two

And both shall row my love and I
And both shall row my love and I

Overall Meaning

In Elin Gaustad's rendition of the traditional folk song, "The Water Is Wide," the singer expresses the sadness of being separated from a loved one. In the opening lines, the singer is faced with a seemingly insurmountable challenge; the water is too wide to cross, and they lack the ability to fly. However, they cling to the idea of love as a boat that can navigate the obstacles that life throws their way. The imagery of the boat that can 'carry two' is symbolic of the idea that love is a partnership that takes two people to be successful. The singer laments the transient nature of love, which 'grows old and waxes cold' over time.

if i'm not mistaken this song is actually called Carrickfergus, which is an Irish folksong. The Water is Wide must either be a new title, or I'm wrong.
