Midnight Sun
Ella Fitzgerald/Nelson Riddle's Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your lips were like a red and ruby chalice, warmer than the summer night
The clouds were like an alabaster palace rising to a snowy height.
Each star it's own aurora borealis, suddenly you held me tight,
I could see the midnight sun.

I can't explain the silver rain that found me--or was that a moonlight veil?
The music of the universe around me, or was that a nightingale?
And then your arms miraculously found me,suddenly the sky turned pale,
I could see the midnight sun.

Was there such a night, it's a thrill i still don't quite believe,
But after you were gone, there was still some stardust on my sleeve.

The flame of it may dwindle to an ember, and the stars forget to shine,
And we may see the meadow in december, icy white and crystalline.

But oh my darling always i'll remember when your lips were close to mine,
And we saw the midnight sun.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Ella Fitzgerald and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra's song Midnight Sun describe a magical and romantic night where the singer's lover's lips are described as a "red and ruby chalice, warmer than the summer night." The setting is also described as otherworldly with clouds like an "alabaster palace" and stars with their "own aurora borealis." The singer cannot fully explain the experience but mentions the "music of the universe around me" and the moonlight that seemed like a veil. They also mention how their arms miraculously found each other, and suddenly the sky turned pale, and they could see the midnight sun.

The lyrics go on to ask if there was such a night, and the singer admits that it's a thrill that they still don't quite believe. However, they reminisce that even though their lover left, there was still "some stardust on my sleeve." The song ends with a bittersweet tone, with the singer acknowledging that the flame of the magical night may dwindle, and the stars may forget to shine. Still, they will always remember the night when they saw the midnight sun with their lover who held them tight.

In my humble opinion, Ella's rendition of this jazz classic hasn't been touched and is still the touchstone for upcoming female vocalist.

Perfection personified! The First Lady Of Song! The look on Diz's face said it all! He;s in a state of pure bliss and so am I when I listen to Ella.

Thanks for uploading this. That picture of Dizzy Gillespie looking at her like he was a smitten schoolboy says it all. Sing the song, make me smile, teach me something. The greatest jazz musicians were always listening for new ideas, and Ella was not only perfect in phrasing and tone, she is a giant of jazz improvisation.

They only need one name.

Louis. Benny. Dizzy. Bird. Billie. Frank. Sarah. Tony. Nat. Miles. Thelonious. Ella.

A masterpiece indeed. Nobody sings this song like The First Lady of Song, born 100 years ago today.
