You've Got A Friend
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep you head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at you door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there

Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend
You've got a friend

Ain't it good to know you've got a friend
Ain't it good to know you've got a friend

Overall Meaning

The song "You've Got A Friend" by Ella Fitzgerald is a comforting and reassuring message to someone who is going through a tough time. The song begins with a recognition that sometimes life is hard and things aren't going right. The solution to this is to close your eyes and think of the person singing the song. The person states that they will be there to brighten up even the darkest night. Then the chorus comes in, saying that if the person ever needs help, they just have to call out the singer's name and they'll come running to see them. The chorus suggests that no matter what season it is, or how long it has been since they've seen each other, the singer is always there for the person who needs them.

The second verse gives an example of when this help might be needed. If the sky is dark and full of clouds and that old north wind starts blowing, the person should keep their head together and call out the singer's name. The singer will come knocking at their door. And then the chorus comes back in, repeating that the person just has to callthe singer's name and they'll be there. The final verse ends with a reminder that it's good to know that you have a friend, especially when people can be so cold and hurtful.

Overall, the song is a beautiful message of friendship and support. It reminds us all that we're not alone in our struggles and that we always have someone we can turn to for help.
