Ridin' High
Ella Fitzgerald & Buddy Bregman Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life's great, life's grand
Future, all planned
No more, clouds in the sky
How'm I ridin'? I'm ridin' high

Someone, I love
Mad for, my love
So long, Jonah, goodbye
How'm I ridin'? I'm ridin' high

Floating, on a starlit ceiling
Doting, on the cards I'm dealing
Gloating, because I'm feeling so hap-hap-happy, I'm slap-happy
So ring bells, sing songs

Blow horns, beat gongs
Our love, never will die
How'm I ridin'? I'm ridin' high

Someone, I love
Mad for, my love
So long, Jonah, goodbye
How'm I ridin'? I'm ridin' high

Floating, on a starlit ceiling
Doting, on the cards I'm dealing
Gloating, because I'm feeling so hap-hap-happy, I'm slap-happy
So ring bells, sing songs

Blow horns, beat gongs

Our love, never will die
How'm I ridin'? I'm ridin' high

Overall Meaning

The song “Ridin' High” by Ella Fitzgerald is about being blissful and in love. It begins by describing the environment as perfect as clouds are all gone and the future is planned out. The singer then goes on to talk about how happy she is because she has someone she loves who reciprocates the same affection.

The lyrics, “So long Jonah, goodbye” suggests the end of a doomed relationship and the potential beginning of a new one. The singer is so high on love that she compares herself to being on a floating starlit ceiling, feeling like she has a winning hand and is enjoying it, and to top it all off, feels so happy that she is slap-happy. She concludes that their love is so strong that it will never die and that they will always be riding high.

The song has a feel-good groove that complements the upbeat lyrics. Thanks to the combined technical ability of Ella Fitzgerald and Buddy Bregman, the music is both pleasing to the ear and effortlessly delivered with relatable lyrics.

Love Ella and Cole Porter. I didn't know this was done at Capitol. The sound is great and I like how you've worked your magic. Lots of separation and depth now. Thanks Bob.

Thanks, Ray! Capitol had the very best equipment that ever existed. This must have been recorded at the old studios on Melrose as the new tower on Vine just north of Hollywood Bl was still 2 months from its opening date. Capitol always had the very best equipment on the planet, until 1963, when it was all ripped out in favor of the new, sterile transistorized crap.

Superb work again Bob! Sounds wonderful! Thanks! 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks Christopher! I stumbled upon this CD I bought 20 years ago, but never played it again, since it was in mono. Now I have the software to make it sound precisely the way I want it. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I loved working on it! You can't get enough Ella. ...and you can't beat the sound of these mid-50's recordings from Capitol Studios. They were simply the very best. I didn't have alter anything to make it sound great in stereo!

Ingo Stein

The mix is great as always! Ella is fantastic, Porter is the best, but I am not really a big Bregman fan. Wished she would have recorded the Porter Songbook album with Nelson Riddle 😀 Anyway, your work made the whole thing superb to my ears!

Bob Zwolinski

Thanks, Ingo! I love this recording. I'm happy with the way it turned out. The guy that did the digital mastering did an excellent job! Buddy Bregman went to my church in Hollywood in the early 2000. I like his arrangements. Very different from Nelson Riddle. I can't get enough Ella!

Great work, Bob. Another winner here. Keep 'em comin'.

Bob Zwolinski

Thanks, Sammy! You can't beat that high-fidelity sound from these mid-50's recordings done at Capitol! Didn't have to lift a finger to make it sound great in stereo!

Christine Anne

Bob Zwolinski

Thanks, Jane & Brian! I can never get enough of Ella!
