Something's Gotta Give
Ella Fitzgerald ( track dates) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somethings gotta give,
Somethings gotta give
Somethings gotta give
When an irresistible force such as you

Meets and old immovable object like me
You can bet as sure as you live
Something's gotta give, something's gotta give,
Something's gotta give.

When an irrepressible smile such as yours
Warms an old implacable heart such as mine
Don't say no because I insist.
Somewhere, somehow,
Someone's gonna be kissed.

So en garde who knows what the fates have in store
From their vast mysterious sky?
I'll try hard ignoring those lips I adore
But how long can anyone try?

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight it with all of our might,
Chances are some heavenly star spangled night
We'll find out as sure as we live
Something's gotta give, something's gotta give,
Something's gotta give.

Fight, fight, fight it with all of our might,
Chances are some heavenly star spangled night
We'll find out as sure as we live
Something's gotta give, something's gotta give,

Something's gotta give.
Something's gotta , something's gotta give

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald's "Something Gotta Give" describe two people who are attracted to each other but are facing a dilemma due to their differences. The singer, an old immovable object, is faced with an irresistible force in the form of the person they are singing to. The singer goes on to acknowledge the power of the other person's smile and how it has warmed their heart. They implore the other person not to say no to their advances and that "somewhere, somehow, someone's gonna be kissed." The lyrics also suggest that the two are destined to be together, regardless of their differences, and that they should fight for their love with all their might.

Overall, "Something Gotta Give" is a song about the struggles of an unlikely pair coming together against the odds. The lyrics convey the passion the singer feels towards the other person and express the hope that their love can overcome their differences.

Ella Fitzgerald just got better and better and was at the top of her game in the 50's and 60's.  Her wide octave range and perfect clarity and phrasing of every lyric rated her perfection.  Always her best when backed up by musicians like Nelson Riddle.

You can tell when it's Nelson Riddle. Sound like Sinatra arrangements.
Perfection! Never tire of her! I get Zen when I listen to her!

In addition to Ella's great singing, Nelson Riddle's wonderful arrangement deserves much of the credit.

My girl forever. Ñever forgotten

This popular standard was written for the 1955 musical Daddy Long Legs and performed by Fred Astaire. I loved it in that movie, but Ella's swingin' version is my all-time favorite.
