Some good versions of Mr Strayhorn's A Train over the years by various singers but none come within miles of Ella's . Should be preserved for all time to show future folk just what we enjoyed in the 20th century. A golden age of music.

An incredible voice, and she could scat like nobody's business.  Ella once did a cameo in a Roy Rogers movie.  They put her on a bus with Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers.  She sang "A Tisket A Tasket".  It became a hit.

Why cut out the part where she and the audience laugh at approx. 5:34? Notice how it kind of skips? It doesn't do that in the complete version, which I have. It adds a level of personalization that this sadly lacks. Or could just be because that's my favorite part - she kind of catches herself, then laughs, and the audience laughs with her. You can still kind of hear the smile in her voice after it comes back from the cut, when she's going, "Heeedeee oooooo EE". Makes me sad it's not here.

No idea, I've heard this particular version of Ella singing Billy and Duke's classic several times on YouTube and it's memorable, although probably my favorite rendition of Ella singing The A Train would have to be from the Verve CD 'Ella Sings The Duke Ellington Songbook' which even has Dizzy Gillespie as one of the trumpeters.

At the "Juan Les Pins jazz Festival she engaged in an un believable duet with a cricket singing in a nearby pine tree... A fabulous moment. I hope someone recorded that instant of pure magic.

Oh I LOVE That Version too - Have the Songbook also - around this time in her career, and give or take 15-20 years in either direction, I don't think Ella could have sung a note off-key if her life depended on it! - Am happy to say I saw her live twice - in 1978, and in 1985 - even then she was wonderful, even if not quite up to her Verve Years Standards ..

If you understand "tenor battle" then imagine the lead horns face her one by one and they do their thing - make music. Contrast that with Spring can really hang you up the most in the same recording at 26:45, that she recorded several times before but here voice acts her song as a vulnerable girl.
