Expectations
Ella Isaacson & Gallant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Didn′t lock me in it for a bit
I learned that from you
Clothes that you gave me didn't fit
The life didn′t too
Mirrors were my best friend
'Cause they told me the truth
Oh whoa
And that just wouldn't do

Know that you always meant well
But it felt like a slap in the face
Maybe you′ll finally get it some day

Believe me, I had different expectations too
So sure that I would end up just like you
I know that you let it all out for me
For a second, I thought it could be right for me
I had different expectations too
Believe me, I had different expectations too

Told you I′m not the type to commit, but
I broke my own rules
Claiming that my love is counterfeit
Sounds like another excuse
You blame it on the distance (Uh)
But you can't show me the proof
Oh, I do everything to win but I lose

You say you know that I always meant well
But you keep making up new mistakes
Girl, gotta get out your own way, babe

Believe me, I had different expectations too
So sure that I would end up just like you (Eh)
I know that you let it all out for me
For a second, I thought it could be right for me
I had different expectations too
Believe me, I had different expectations too

I really thought it would be me and you
Believe me, I had different expectations too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Isaacson Gallant's song "Expectations" tell the story of a relationship that didn't meet the expectations of both parties. The first verse reveals that the singer felt locked in, presumably by the other person in the relationship. The clothes and the lifestyle that were imposed on her didn't fit her. Mirrors were her best friend as they showed her the truth that she couldn't live the life that was expected of her. The second verse is sung by the other person in the relationship, who says that he always meant well but it felt like a slap in the face. Both of them had different expectations from the relationship, and they couldn't meet each other's expectations. The singer broke her own rules and claimed that her love was counterfeit. The other person blamed it on the distance and couldn't provide any proof.

The chorus reveals that both of them had different expectations from the relationship. They were both sure that they would end up just like the other person, but it didn't happen that way. They tried their best, but it wasn't enough. The singer really thought that it would be her and the other person, but it didn't happen that way. The song ends with a sense of resignation about the fact that sometimes expectations and reality don't match.
