Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Ella Yelich O'Connor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Welcome to your life
There's no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you

Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

It's my own design
It's my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most

Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I'll be right behind you

So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

Everybody wants to rule the world
Everybody wants to rule the world

Overall Meaning

The song “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Lorde is a cover of the original song by Tears for Fears from 1985, but she puts her own spin on it through her haunting, melancholic vocals. The first few lines set the tone for the song, as Lorde sings in a detached, otherworldly voice, “Welcome to your life / There's no turning back / Even while we sleep / We will find you.” These ominous lyrics allude to the idea of a dystopian future where there’s no escape from the system that’s been established, whether you’re awake or asleep.

The next few lines, “Acting on your best behaviour / Turn your back on mother nature / Everybody wants to rule the world,” are a critique on the corrupting influence of power and how humans, in their quest for power, have turned their backs on the natural world. Lorde’s voice gets more emotional in the chorus as she sings, “It's my own design / It's my own remorse / Help me to decide / Help me make the most / Of freedom and of pleasure / Nothing ever lasts forever / Everybody wants to rule the world.” The chorus highlights the theme of power and how people are willing to do whatever it takes to get it, even if they have to sacrifice their morals and ideals. The last few lines, “So glad we've almost made it / So sad they had to fade it / Everybody wants to rule the world / Everybody wants to rule the world / Everybody wants to rule the world” suggests the idea that the pursuit of power is ultimately futile because nothing lasts forever, but people continue to chase it anyway.
