Club at the End of the Street
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the shades are drawn
And the light of the moon is banned
And the stars up above
Walk the heavens hand in hand
There's a shady place
At the end of the working day
Where young lovers go
And this hot little trio plays

That's where we meet
That's where we meet
Me and you rendezvous
In the club at the end of the street
Oh, where we meet
Oh, where we meet
Me and you rendezvous
In the club at the end of the street

From the alleyways
Where the catwalks gently sway
You hear the sound of Otis
And the voice of Marvin Gaye
In this smoky room
There's a jukebox, plays all night
And we can dance real close
Beneath the pulse of a neon light

That's where we meet
That's where we meet
Me and you rendezvous
In the club at the end of the street
Oh, where we meet
Oh, where we meet
Me and you rendezvous
In the club at the end of the street

There's a downtown smell of cooking
From the flame on an open grill
There's a sax and a big bass pumping
Lord, have mercy
Ooh, you can't sit still
Oh, you can't sit still

Oh, that's where we meet
That's where we meet
Me and you rendezvous
In the club at the end of the street
Ooh, where we meet
Where we meet
Me and you rendezvous
In the club at the end of the street

Oh, oh, yeah
You can't stand still
Where we meet
In the club at the end of the street
You can't stand still
Where we meet
In the club at the end of the street
You can't stand still
Where we meet
At the club at the end of the street
Where we meet

Where we meet
At the club at the end of the street

Overall Meaning

"Club at the End of the Street" by Elton John is a song that tells a story of a secret place where couples can spend time together without being seen or judged. The lyrics depict an exciting and mysterious atmosphere created by a unique combination of sounds and sights. Elton John starts by setting the scene with "shades drawn" and "the light of the moon is banned," creating a feeling of secrecy and forbidden love. He then continues with images of "stars up above walk the heavens hand in hand" and "young lovers" going to a "shady place." The three-piece band playing at the club provides the perfect background music for dancing in the smoky room beneath the neon lights.

The song's overall theme is that of escape and living in the moment. Elton John sings about how the club brings together an unlikely group of people, including smooth soul singers Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye, and the tantalizing smells emanating from the nearby food carts. The lyrics suggest that this clandestine destination is a place to let your hair down and relax, to do whatever you want with whomever you want without fear. The song encourages the experience of being free and the joy of spontaneity.

For me, this is Elton John at his best. So underrated.

@neoflyboy

It is. I would say that he was one of the inventors of soft rock, not many people can say that. A legend, a musical genius. Not everybody created songs for john lennon and played with him. 3500 shows and counting. Beyond passion.

@groovedigger00

Probably his most underrated single! This should have been much bigger than it was, and should be ranked up there with the rest of his classics.
