Children Of The Revolution
Elton John Ringo Starr & T. Rex Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And it's good for your mind
Well you can twist and shout
Let it all hang out
But you won't fool the children of the revolution
No you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, no, no!
Well you can terraplane
In the fallin' rain
I drive a Rolls Royce
Cause it's good for my voice
But you won't fool the children of the revolution...
The lyrics of "Children of the Revolution" by T. Rex delve into themes of rebellion, defiance, and youth empowerment. The song's chorus, "But you won't fool the children of the revolution," highlights a generation's resistance towards being misled or deceived by the older establishment. This line suggests that the younger generation is enlightened, perceptive, and unwilling to conform or be swayed by outdated social norms or false promises. The mention of children here may symbolize not just literal youth but those who are innovative and forward-thinking in their approach to societal change.
The opening lines, "Well you can bump and grind, and it's good for your mind, well you can twist and shout, let it all hang out," can be interpreted as an endorsement of freedom, self-expression, and a rejection of societal constraints. The lyrics seem to advocate for individuality, authenticity, and breaking free from conventional expectations. The reference to bumping and grinding, twisting and shouting suggests a celebratory and uninhibited approach to life that is unapologetically bold and authentic.
The lines "Well you can terraplane in the fallin' rain, I drive a Rolls Royce cause it's good for my voice," juxtapose the experiences of exhilarating thrills and luxurious indulgence. "Terraplaning" in the rain can be symbolic of taking risks, living on the edge, or defying conventions, while driving a Rolls Royce may represent opulence, success, or the trappings of wealth. These contrasting images further reinforce the song's themes of rebellion against societal norms while embracing personal freedom and individuality.
Overall, "Children of the Revolution" celebrates the spirit of rebellion, individuality, and defiance against conformity. The song suggests that true revolutionaries are those who refuse to be swayed by external forces, uphold their authenticity and vision, and challenge societal norms and expectations. It serves as a rallying cry for a generation that is unafraid to question, resist, and fight for change, embodying a sense of youthful defiance and empowerment.

Ringo is the coolest drummer that ever hit the world. His drumming doesn't need to be flashy because he plays for the song with style and perfect syncopation. Just listen to I Found Out and you'll see what I mean - that punk-ish steady beat driving the melody and supplying some powerful steam to John's raw vocals.
