Just a few things before everyone gets to excited.

40km range (which is effectively 20km) is not a lot at all. Or let’s say it is nothing for the trapper, hunter or any other not recreational user. I drove way more then 20kms just to get up the mountain where I wanted to start playing.

Then the recreational user.
It looks to me that there are half inch lugs on the snowmobile tracks. Based on his comment about the high energy requirements of a track drive, I assume that those were chosen to save energy. Well, good thinking, but why so much power then? As soon you use the full power, the sled will dig itself in. Besides that the best you can do is trail riding or visiting your next door neighbour, most of the recreational users though, like to play in powder.

I really don’t see any chance that this machine will find its place in the market. Excellent Engineering work! But not more then a concept at this stage of battery science.

Recommendation:
Reduce power to match the tracks properties or make tracks more aggressive and hope it will not drain the battery to fast.

Tiny Giant indeed the greatest downfall. I’m a imperial unit guy and I think 40km is about 25 miles. I’ve personally put 150 on in a day quite easily.

This is great! One of things I remember most about touring with snowmobile was the smell of exhaust from the driver in front of me. It was so unexpected, exhaust fumes in the wilderness. Definitely took away from the experience. Hope this becomes widespread.

The Driven I mean these sleds would be ok for a novice for a one time ride but you'd get bored quick after a few hours.

To me, 2 stoke exhaust is the smell of the wintertime northern bush here in Canada.
If you don't like the smell get a 4stroke.

i'ver never once noticed the fumes, maybe you should use more efficient snowmobiles, Newer Polaris don't smell at all i've gone 10km through the backwood with 3 people in front of me and not once, did i catch a whiff of 2 stroke exhaust , maybe i'm just used to it from the 3-4 times i go out every season or maybe your solution is just to tour on more efficient snowmobiles that aren't tuned poorly before judging every snowmobile in existence

I could fit that in one of my RGV 250 motorcycles. Normally they use a 250cc V twin 2 stroke engine with a fuel consumption of only 20 odd mpg and a range of around 80 miles. 0-60 is 3.6 seconds and a top speed of over 125 mph! An electric conversion would be fun!

I live, breathe, eat snowmobiles, And this is the first time I've ever see a electric snowmobile! As a master technician for over 30 years yah I seen it all, Racing, and fixing all brands This is so cool. Take a Lynx, Which is a European Ski-Doo (BRP) And put in a electric unit The only thing I don't like is the range 40 K A short Ride.

I wouldn't mind having one of these. Sleds are sooo damn thirsty - and with the fuel costs in Norway it kinda hurts the economy if you drive a lot. Also it would be awesome to be able to just charge up rather than driving to a gas station to fetch fuel. Of course you'd need to be sure that the range is sufficient enough for you. For me, this would be a perfect sled. 😉

As others have said not super impressed with the range, power, weight or performance. As a higher level enthusiast this would be boring for me. But I am really impressed with the near factory fit and finish and functionality of this. I would venture in 5-7 years the electric will be at or near enthusiast levels.

I even was in Rovaniemi, but mostly way more north. I drove a snowmobile, and it was massive fun! Even though it was a regular one ;)

a long way to go to compete with the 2-stroke and 4-stroke high end snowmobiles, 165-200hp at a much lower weight, and with a 300km range (one tank of gas, i carry 20L extra for about 150km more when im going far) but i admire their efforts, when the power density of batteries reaches that or exceeds that of gasoline i will switch too.

The problem with this is what people go snowmobiling for is to hear a two stroke bouncing off 7-9 thousand rpms while going 75 down the trail/ditch/lake but that’s exactly what the electric sleds take away so good concept good on paper but bad in practice

It sounds crazy but off rd electric vehicles should come with a PTO shaft you can manually charge yourself a few miles worth in an emergency.

Uffdah.... have you ever dragged a broken down snowmobile by hand? The amount of effort required is enormous. I really doubt that you are going to be able to generate enough power from your body to be able to get the thing to power itself for more than a couple hundred feet.

It will be the same deal with solar. You would need an ENORMOUS solar panel on a sunny day to make that happen.

Went Aurora hunting in 2015. Back then they showed us a prototype of an eSled they were testing with help from a Finnish university. Not ready for normal use so we used dino-juice sleds

I could see the peacefulness of the ride but I wouldn't stay too far from a power outlet. If you take a gas powered generator with you would be okay.

We drove them a week before, they are awsome! And drove the BMW i3 to Rovaniemi with using 32 fast charging and 4 over night ac charges to cover 3344km to Rovaniemi Finland ! EV trip!

Can we acknowledge that the sled weights 617lbs! Most sleds now and old weigh around 450lbs and on the very low end with extreme modification can be as light as 375

Bjorn- You mentioned that this is the only electric snowmobile in the world, that's not true. There is a company here in Quebec called Taiga Motors. Fred Lambert from Electrek did a review of it north of Montreal.

Can't wait until there is a viable electric replacement for my 800 2 stroke. 16x" track, 3" lugs, 70-80mph top end, 100 mile real world powder range, and 400-550lbs dry. Couldn't keep it on the showroom floors. But that would come with a hefty sticker... Tesla needs to make the Model P (powder) and bring it to us for $17-20k

Emanuel you have to remember that bigger engine does not mean more power consumption only a few kilos more weight. And in the future when the battery technology has advanced why couldn't you install the same system in Lynx boondoker and have that power and fun in deep snow. Also, the snowmobiles are made touring not mountain riding.

I dunno, nice idea but I think eliminating the CVT is a mistake. For low speed tourist trips, it probably works just fine. However, bang that thing hard through the twisties and I bet becomes a handful. The CVT handles changing conditions of the snow surface so that it applies the correct power to the ground, torque sensing in a way. In the current market of reciprocal engine sleds. Some of the cheaper 600cc models push 120HP and will easily crack 100MPH. You'll pay nearly double for a sled with 160-170HP, however, out of the box you would be lucky to crack 110MPH! This goes to prove that you need greater performance gains to only go marginally faster. But keep in mind, that CVT is tuned so well. 160HP out of a turn at 40MPH gets you to the next turn real quick!

This is fantastic. I've always thought it's a shame that snowmobiles use noisy, polluting engines in such peaceful, clean surroundings. I know there are practical reasons for using snowmobiles but it'll be nice to see them go electric. I have been on a snowmobile, on one of those snow safaris on holiday, but wouldn't do it again because of the petrol/gas engine. I'd jump on one of these though. In more remote locations I imagine you could fairly easily charge these with solar, at least in the summer, and solar PV likes the cold.

@Tim's YouTube Channel i'd say that the wight in the front is almost worse than the range. Heavy front will dive in deep powder and wont work properly in big bumps. It wont be good enough for other than the tourists and maybe some ice fishers before the batteries get lighter. Lets hope that they can make much lighter batteries in the future.

Tim Tam modern snowmobiles are actually very quiet especially the bigger four strokers and again there’s barely any smell with those engines. The weight of the snowmobile is a pretty big problem and it’s not as evenly spread as on a regular gasoline one where the fuel rests above the track. Interesting concept but not very usable in real life scenarios

@kjell notbjell It's a long time since I've done wintersport, so I'll have to take your word for it, but my memory is of snowmobile noise carrying in a similar way to scooters - from an observers POV not the rider. Interesting point about weight and distribution. A lot of areas (like planes for instance) are in the early stages of electrification. So, might be good for casual use but not high end. They'll get there.

most noise from stock snowmobiles come from the tracks hiting the ground. many tune them so they get noise. from longtime experience as a skier and a snowmobiler noise isent that much of a problem due to distance and wind cancle alot of noise out. it looks as frontheavy as a tractor and with todays battery technology i wolud consider them to be dangerous to take on moutaintrips because of the range and weatherconditions. but they shold be fantastic to us on trails and for safaries.

You'll get a lot of go-power with the electric drive, but your range on something that rolls as inefficiently as any snowmobile is going to be... MAYBE 20 miles? Barely enough to ride around a 40 acre parcel for any length of time.

Nice sled yes and great idea. However I still prefer to dangle my skies at 80 plus miles an hour. Smelling 2 stoke and hearing it rev near 10 grand. Now that's snowmobiling. Where I live 40 miles just wont cut it. We have put 3 to 400kms on easy on a weekend

Slow af my long track summit 583 would dust it. But in other words the e sled has its pros and cons the pros being if you dont like the noise and exhaust you have that its nice and smooth on takeoff. But the cons outlay by alot because it only goes 100kmh and only has a range of 40km I'm guessing in eco mode plus if you do like the noise you dont get that loud roar of a 2 stroke that many people love. But keep on working on the e sled and you might have a decent sled that will sell for lots. But other people are going back to the old sleds because there reliable and are good on gas but good luck

They are only loud because of aftermarket exhaust systems, It's like Complaining cars are loud after they use aftermarket parts and tune the engine to beyond factory specifications
