Back in the day (when the military wasn't a poli-sci petri dish of idiocy) during port calls, the deck crews used to buy used vehicles, hook them up to the catapults, and then take bets on how far they could sling them.

I've been at Newport News Shipbuilding for 28 years. I have worked on 4 new carriers and several submarines, I could not be prouder. This video is awesome but actually being on the ship during catapult testing is unreal. SHIPBUILDER PROUD!!!

I remember the USS Hancock (CVA-19) launching that test vehicle in Yokosuka harbor in 1966. That was with a steam catapult.

Once had the pleasure of watching HMS Ark Royal testing her steam cats, while alongside in Guzz. The test weights were different sizes to represent different aircraft, but were all painted yellow and flew beautifully!!! lol.

That's like 20 feet wtf. My dad used to fly f-18's off of those and he was like "Yeah you just had to kinda hope your wheels caught when you landed and that you weren't going too slow because you'd stall and fall into the ocean and the water is cold."

I think they were actually done with the tests after 2 or 3 launches but they just liked firing the thing to watch the splash LOL.
Actually I think they should play with small wings or something to keep the nose of the sled up slightly and see how many skips they can get.

In the first shot, the cart tumbled in midair and landed in the water back-end down, causing the cart to skip once on the water upon landing. In the second shot, the cart landed nose-down and didn't skip.

In the worst case scenario of a deck hit I wonder how quick this system would be to repaired for instance at midway some ships had multiple direct hits by the Japanese yet the could still launch using the catapulte thanks to the ingenuity to there crew. No matter how good air defence is, something can still get through so let's hope it is easier to repair

It's still being shaken down as I write this. They've had problems with the control system, mainly that it is too hard on certain aircraft. The problem has been fixed, but it won't be ready for the field until 2019. I'm sure sea trials will show even more problems that will have to be fixed. There are also having problems with the power generation systems, and they've even called in people from the civil nuclear industry to look into the problem.
