Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Kill The Boy
Emeli Sandé Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Killer written on my face
I know that when he finds out what I've done
It's going to take his life away
And his heart will break and once
The pain will stop the beating
Skin will turn as cold as ice
When his lungs collapse enough will
I will gently close his eyes
It's going to kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy, tonight alright
I walk around with murder in my eyes
I'm going to turn my baby blue
I practised in the mirror hundred times
But still can't bring myself to shoot
See his heart will break and once
The pain will stop the beating
Skin will turn as cold as ice
When his lungs collapse enough will
There be no more breathing?
I will gently close his eyes
It's going to kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy, tonight alright
I'm in the kitchen when he gets back home
I hide the knife behind my back
My hands are shaking when he smiles at me
The only way he can react
See his heart will break and once
The pain will stop the beating
Skin will turn as cold as ice
When his lungs collapse enough will
There be no more breathing?
I will gently close his eyes
It's going to kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy
I'm a kill, kill the boy, tonight alright
It's going to kill, kill the boy
Kill, kill the boy tonight tonight alright
In Emeli Sandé's song "Kill The Boy," the lyrics depict a narrative of intense inner turmoil and a desire to end a relationship that has caused the singer great pain and suffering. The song is metaphorical in nature, with the concept of killing the boy symbolizing the act of breaking free from this toxic relationship.
The lyrics suggest that the singer has reached a breaking point and feels trapped in a situation where they can no longer endure the emotional burden. Walking around with a "bullet on my tongue" and "killer written on my face" indicate the weight of the words left unsaid, the pain and guilt that the singer is carrying. They understand that their actions will have significant consequences for their partner, causing their heart to break and ultimately taking their life away, metaphorically speaking. The hesitation to follow through with these intentions is evident in lines like "I practiced in the mirror a hundred times but still can't bring myself to shoot." This reflects the internal struggle between the desire for liberation and the difficulty in taking action to end the relationship.
The chorus of the song repeatedly emphasizes the determination to "kill the boy" tonight, indicating a sense of urgency and resolve to finally break free from this destructive relationship. The singer envisions a future where the pain and suffering will cease, where the heart will no longer beat, the skin turns cold, and breathing ceases. The closing of the partner's eyes gently represents the finality of their demise, a bittersweet act of releasing them from the pain they have caused but also acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
Overall, "Kill The Boy" is a poignant exploration of the complexities of relationships and the internal struggle to let go of someone who has brought immense pain. Emeli Sandé's emotive delivery and evocative lyrics capture the raw emotions and conflicting desires, leaving the listener immersed in the singer's tumultuous journey.
