Trilogy
Emerson Lake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've tried to mend
The love that ended
Long ago although we still pretend
Our love is surely coming to an end
Don't waste the time you've got to love again

We tried to lie
But you and I
Know better than to let each other lie
The thought of lying to you makes me cry
Counting up the time that's passed us by

I've sent this letter hoping it will reach your hand
And if it does I hope that you will understand

That I must leave in a while
And though I smile
You know the smile is only there to hide
What I'm really feeling deep inside
Just a face where I can hang my pride

Goodbye
Goodbye

We'll talk of places that we went
And times that we have spent
Together penniless and free

You'll see the day another way
And they could put the sunshine
for a nighttime where you lay

You're love began I don't know when

But if you do I know that
you'll be happy in the end

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song 'Trilogy' by Emerson Lake are deep and profound. They touch upon the themes of lost love, regret, and nostalgia. The opening line "I've tried to mend the love that ended long ago" speaks volumes about the desperation of a person who wants to reignite a flame that once was bright but has since faded away. The song uses various metaphors and poetic devices to create a vivid picture of the pain and turmoil that the singer is feeling. The line "Just a face where I can hang my pride" is particularly poignant, as it conveys a sense of loneliness and vulnerability that is hard to express in words.

The second stanza continues to delve into the theme of honesty and authenticity in a relationship. The line "The thought of lying to you makes me cry" is a powerful statement about the importance of trust and transparency in any romantic relationship. The song acknowledges that sometimes love isn't enough, and that people have to make difficult choices and sacrifices to do what is right for them. The line "Goodbye, goodbye" at the end is a bittersweet farewell to a past that can never be reclaimed.

@gordonlandreth9550

Over fifty years old and still sounds wonderful , definitely ELP was one of the best bands of the 70's .

@michelebravin2248

Masterpiece. Period. Like it or not 😉

@egoslave7772

Stunning and unrivaled. Arguably the greatest Prog album of all time.

@gerrycoogan6544

It's definitely on the (very) short list along with "Brain Salad Surgery".
But whenever I listen to "Foxtrot" or "Selling England...", I swither.
Genesis or ELP?
If it was a football match, I think it would be a 4-4 draw with both sets of fans applauding a superb game at the final whistle and, in the pub an hour later, agreeing that ELP probably scored the most spectacular goal of the match but that Genesis thoroughly deserved at least a point.

@ericsguitar8029

agreed. Except...not arguably.

@FILIOUS_DEO_FRATER_UT_SATANAS

It's Undeniably great, but the best prog album ever? Not in the same universe as In The Court Of The Crimson King, mate.

@egoslave7772

@@FILIOUS_DEO_FRATER_UT_SATANAS , nah, great album but doesnt come close for my taste. If I was to choose an alternative to Trilogy, it would be yes - tales from topographic oceans or Close to the Edge. For Crimson, I prefer Larks' Tongues in Aspic.

@FILIOUS_DEO_FRATER_UT_SATANAS

@@egoslave7772 Actually, Larks' Tongues is possibly my favorite Crimson album.

Algo dentro de mí se estremece cuando escucho éste long play. El gen ancestral revive en el sur del mundo, nacida en Comodoro Rivadavia, Patagonia, Argentina. La música despierta en dónde sea que la sangre vive.
