It Ain't Me
Emily Braden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I had a dream we were sipping whiskey neat
Highest floor, The Bowery
Nowhere's high enough
Somewhere along the lines
We stopped seeing eye to eye
You were staying out all night
And I had enough
No, I don't wanna know
Where you been or where you're goin'
But I know I won't be home
And you'll be on your own
Who's gonna walk you
Through the dark side of the morning?
Who's gonna rock you
When the sun won't let you sleep?
Who's waking up to drive you home
When you're drunk and all alone?
Who's gonna walk you
Through the dark side of the morning?

It ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me

I had a dream we were back to seventeen
Summer nights and The Libertines
Never growing up i'll take with me
The polaroids and the memories
But you know I'm gonna leave
Behind the worst of us who's gonna walk you
Through the dark side of the morning?
Who's gonna rock you
When the sun won't let you sleep?
Who's waking up to drive you home
When you're drunk and all alone?
Who's gonna walk you
Through the dark side of the morning?

It ain't me, no no it ain't me, no no
It ain't me, no no it ain't me, no no
Who's gonna walk you through the
Dark side of the morning? It ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me

(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful)

Overall Meaning

The song "It Ain't Me" by Emily Braden explores themes of a deteriorating relationship and the realization that the singer is no longer willing to be a part of their partner's destructive behavior. The lyrics paint a picture of a dream where the couple was once happy and carefree, sipping whiskey on the highest floor of The Bowery (a famous street in Manhattan). However, somewhere along the way, their relationship started falling apart, as they began to have disagreements and lose connection.

The chorus emphasizes the singer's desire not to know about their partner's whereabouts or future plans. They have reached a point of exhaustion and have decided to leave, leaving their partner to face the consequences of their choices alone. The imagery of walking through the dark side of the morning symbolizes facing the consequences of their actions without the support of their partner. The singer questions who will comfort their partner and be there for them when they can't sleep, are intoxicated, or feeling isolated.

The repeated phrase "it ain't me" serves as a powerful declaration that the singer is no longer willing to be the one to support their partner through their destructive behavior. The phrase is also repeated with gratitude for the good times they shared, perhaps reminiscing about their youthful days when they were carefree and filled with nostalgia. However, they firmly assert that they will not be dragged down by the worst aspects of the relationship any longer.

Overall, the song captures the emotional journey of realizing the toxicity of a relationship and finding the strength to walk away, while acknowledging the fond memories that will be carried forward.

@alyssamitchellm

muriaal Exactly what I was thinking!

@greenboi3458

Her deepish female voice and scatting remind me a lot of Ella Fitzgerald! Amazing cover!

@jennyrahaman7485

It does not sound like Ella Fitzgerald. In Ella Fitzgerald's duets with Louis Armstrong in Cheek to Cheek or Dream a Little Dream of Me, her voice was much deeper and a bit more gravelly, Ella Fitzgerald had a much stronger range. I love Ella Fitzgerald's voice and I think this singer does a good performance but they do not sound similar or the same.

@greenboi3458

@@jennyrahaman7485 of course, Ella was in a class of her own. I mainly meant that her style of singing is reminiscent, and Ella is probably a reference for her.

Even during her scatting solo during this song, she uses similar patterns and sounds that Ella uses. Sarah Vaughn as well.

It's been 5 years and I still come back to this one because it's stuck in my brain as such a good composition and melody
