Spill the Wine
Eric Burdon's i Band Lyrics

Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

I was once out strolling one very hot summer's day
When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest
in a big field of tall grass
I lay there in the sun and felt it caressing my face
And I fell asleep and dreamed
I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie
And that I was the star of the movie
This really blew my mind, the fact that me,
an overfed, long-haired leaping gnome
should be the star of a Hollywood movie

But there I was, I was taken to a place, the hall of the mountain kings
I stood high upon a mountain top, naked to the world
In front of every kind of girl, there was
black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones...

Out of the middle came a lady
She whispered in my ear something crazy
She said:

Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

(spoken:)

I thought to myself what could that mean
Am I going crazy or is this just a dream
Now, wait a minute
I know I'm lying in a field of grass somewhere
so it's all in my head
and then.. I heard her say one more time:

(sung:)

Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

(spoken:)
I could feel hot flames of fire roaring at my back
As she disappeared, but soon she returned
In her hand was a bottle of wine, in the other, a glass
She poured some of the wine from the bottle into the glass
And raised it to her lips
And just before she drank it, she said:

(sung:)

Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

Overall Meaning

The song "Spill the Wine" by Eric Burdon's War is a psychedelic classic that tells a story of a man who falls asleep in a field and dreams of becoming a Hollywood star, only to be led on a strange journey by a mysterious woman who whispers in his ear. The lyrics are full of surreal imagery and sexual innuendo, with the repetition of the phrase "Spill the wine and take that pearl" serving as a kind of mantra that underscores the dreamlike quality of the narrative.

The singer of the song is clearly lost and disoriented, unsure of whether he is in the real world or a fantasy world. He describes himself as an "overfed, long-haired leaping gnome" who should not be the star of a Hollywood movie. Yet, he finds himself standing on a mountain top, naked, and surrounded by women of every shape and size. It is in this bizarre setting that he encounters the woman who urges him to "spill the wine and take that pearl."

Should be the star behind a Hollywood movie, hmm
There I was
I was taken to a place
The hall of the mountain kings
I stood high by the mountain tops
Naked to the world
In front of
Every kind of girl
There was long ones, tall ones, short ones, brown ones
Black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones
Out of the middle, came a lady

Something crazy
She said...
Spill the wine, take that pearl
Spill the wine, take that pearl

It's on girl, all you gotta do is spill that wine
Spill that wine, let me feel, let me feel hot, yeah! Yeah!
Spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine
Spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine
Take that pearl!

As a Cuban American, my Afro Cuban friend and I would listen to this to this song around 1974. We would turn off the lights in the room, put psychedelic lights on, play it full blast, and jump around the room like crazy fools. I am 60 years now and I still listen to it. Good songs and memories are hard to forget. Viva Cuba Libre.
