Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
Eric Burdon and the Animals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, can you understand me now?
Sometimes I get a little mad
Don't you know, no one alive can always be an angel
When things go wrong, I seem to go bad

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Yeah, baby, sometimes I'm so carefree
With a joy that's hard to hide
Yeah, and other times it seems that
All I ever have is worry
And then you're bound to see my other side

Oh, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Well If I get edgy, I want you to know
I never mean to take it out on you
Life has its problems, I get more than my share
But there's one thing that I would never do

Oh, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Well If I get edgy, I want you to know
I never mean to take it out on you
Life has its problems, I get more than my share
But there's one thing that I would never do
'Cause I love you
Oh

Oh, now don't you know I'm human
I got my faults just like anyone
And sometimes I lie awake, alone, regretting
Some foolish thing, some sinful thing I've done

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
I said, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Oh, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Overall Meaning

In the song “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” Eric Burdon & The Animals express their frustration at being judged and misunderstood. The song is about being human and falling short, and is a plea to not be judged harshly for mistakes or moments of weakness. The lyrics suggest that sometimes we might react poorly to life’s challenges, but it doesn’t mean our intentions are bad. The singer acknowledges that sometimes they seem carefree, while at other times they struggle with worry and edginess. Through it all, the singer assures their loved one that they never intend to take it out on them, and that they are only human.

The main message of the song is that we are all human and prone to mistakes, but that our intentions are good. The repeated plea to not be misunderstood reinforces the idea that we all want to be seen in the best light possible. The song touches on themes of vulnerability, authenticity, and the need for understanding and acceptance.

No autotune on the vocals, and musicians making honest music. This is such a great performance by Eric Burdon and The Animals. May Chas Chandler and Hilton Valentine rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️

@philvogel5705

Many of the performances on Ed Sullivan were lip sung

@minstrelofMir

also people dont understand how much compression they use they days,,makes everything the loudest thing in the mix and unrealistic

@eileenmaryomalley740

@Phil Vogel no way

@666greyghost666

@Phil Vogel thats not what was stated on the prime rocks series

@maccabbee2014

No reason for autotune back then and on Ed Sullivan only the Supernova Stars performed.

Can you imagine how nerve wracking it would be to perform live like this!!!??? No retakes, no auto tune, no overdubbing or backing tracks. They sound amazing!!!!!

@totallyfrozen

I suppose, but keep in mind that MOST performing bands do it that way. Most musicians are not at the world tour level with Apple computers and Auto-Tune running the show. Most of us just get on a stage, plug in, and put on our best performances. Showmanship is being able to minimize mistakes and emphasize entertainment. Performers have no business having stage fright. That’s for people who shouldn’t be up there to begin with.

@kikivon3501

@totallyfrozen I guess I thought this was a live TV performance? That’s what I was referring to. I know a lot of “ live” TV performances have auto tune, or lip syncing, or backing tracks going on to help the “live” performer.

@michaelvalencia7234

Who even know if this was truly played a lot of bands even Ed has said they lip synced, he always preferred live but Ed knew crowds were too loud in a confined space and it would make the band mates loose tempo… not trying to say they didn’t play or discredit them but my grandfather worked a little on the set of Ed Sullivan and said the old stage area with the seats were probably the lobby of a decent sized hotel and it was very hard to even just here camera queues

My grandfather always said that they would pre record when they did practice runs just in case… and as well as Ed Sullivan asked bands to play specific songs and if they didn’t follow those lists he would start to have them do lip singing
