Carmen's first solo single "All By Myself" was penned by Carmen based on a classical theme by Sergei Rachmaninoff. It was subsequently covered by Celine Dion and also used in the opening scene of the movie 'Bridget Jones' Diary'.
Besides his successful solo career, Carmen is remembered as one of the rock'n'rollers behind the Cleveland, Ohio-based band The Raspberries. As lead vocalist and co-songwriter, he helped the group gain big popularity in the 70s through arena-ready hits such as "Go All the Way" and "Tonight", with the band becoming a cult figure among power pop fans. Carmen reunited with Raspberries producer Jimmy Ienner to be a part of the 'Dirty Dancing' soundtrack, a commercial juggernaut that achieved massive success and was RIAA certified multi-platinum. Carmen's song "Hungry Eyes" reached the top 40 charts in Canada, Germany, the U.S., and elsewhere while attracting critical acclaim. Over the years, Carmen's work has been praised by many of his fellow musicians including Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr among others.
On 24 December 2013, the first new recording in over 15 years by Carmen titled "Brand New Year" was released.

Who can take her where she wants to go
(I'm thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new lover
And I'm not supposed to know
I call her on the telephone
But she's never where she's supposed to be
Well it seems she don't want any part of me
Don't you know I'm gonna lose my mind
If there's someone else after all this time
(I'm thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new man
Who can take her where she wants to go
(I'm thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new lover
And I'm not supposed to know
(Well somethin' tells me)
Maybe my baby's got a new guy
And he's really puttin' on a show
(I'm thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new lover
And I'm not supposed to know
I can't believe it's come to this
But my heart keeps tellin' me there's somethin' wrong
I feel the difference in her kiss
I want to know what I'll do when she's really gone
Well, don't you know I'm gonna lose my mind
If there's someone else after all this time
(I keep thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new man
Who can take her where she wants to go
Maybe my baby's got a new lover
And I'm not supposed to know
(Well somethin' tells me)
Maybe my baby's got a new guy
And he's really puttin' on a show
(I'm thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new lover
And I'm not supposed to know
I can't seem to pin her down
Friends tell me all I'm getting is the runaround
I'm sitting home and it's Saturday night
Is she moving in with someone else tonight
Maybe my baby's got a new man
Who can take her where she wants to go
(I'm thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new lover
And I'm not supposed to know
(Well somethin' tells me)
Maybe my baby's got a new guy
And he's really puttin' on a show
(I'm thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new lover
And I'm not supposed to know
Yes, and I'm not supposed to know
And I'm not supposed to know
Maybe my baby's got a new man
Who can take her where she wants to go
(I'm thinking)
Maybe my baby's got a new lover
And I'm not supposed to know
In Eric Carmen's song "Be My Baby," the singer expresses his fears and suspicions that his partner, referred to as "my baby", may have found someone new in her life. The lyrics convey a sense of jealousy and insecurity as the singer contemplates the possibility of his baby having a new man or lover. There is a sense of helplessness as he tries to reach out to her, but she seems distant and evasive, leading him to question the state of their relationship.
The repeated refrain of "Maybe my baby's got a new man" highlights the singer's ongoing internal struggle and the torment of not knowing the truth about his partner's feelings or actions. The lyrics depict a situation where the singer's attempts to connect with his partner are met with resistance and avoidance, leaving him feeling vulnerable and anxious about the future of their relationship.
The singer's emotions are further highlighted as he observes subtle changes in his partner's behavior, such as her absence or lack of interest when they are together. He grapples with the notion of losing his mind if his fears about his partner having someone else turn out to be true after all the time they have spent together. The lyrics capture the raw emotions of heartbreak and betrayal as the singer comes to terms with the possibility of his partner moving on.
The song also touches on the themes of doubt and uncertainty, as the singer seeks validation from friends and wrestles with the reality of potentially being left behind by his partner. The repeated imagery of Saturday night and the fear of his partner moving in with someone else adds to the sense of urgency and desperation in the lyrics. Overall, "Be My Baby" encapsulates the complex emotions of love, loss, and insecurity within a relationship, painting a poignant picture of a man struggling to come to terms with the idea of his partner finding a new love.
